Default Dash Lights

I'm hoping some one can help me out, here's what i got:

1997 Ford Mustang GT Coupe convertible, 4.6L V8 automatic

My car has headlights and dash lights that turn on automatically when it gets dark out. The other day the light selector **** was in the auto position and the headlights and dash lights were on. Then all of a sudden the dash lights went out but the headlamps stayed on. If I used a turn signal or took my seat belt off the appropriate lights would illuminate but every thing else was dark. I pulled the light selector **** to the manual on position and the dash lights came back on. Any ideas on why they won't go on in the auto on position?

Wow I didnt even know that the 97 Mustangs had that feature/option. Wish I had a clue on how to help you with that though. Hopefuly someone had this experience. Maybe its a faulty Dark/Light sensor?
