Default Getting gears installed tommorow

I bought 4.10 gears off ebay. Seller states they were used for about 500 miles before he decided he didnt want a gear that steep.

I purchased them for 20 bucks. I am getting them installed tomorrow. Do I need to clean them at all before the install? They are slightly oily.

No dirt or mud, just a little oil.

Also, I wont be able to tell you much of what I think of them for awhile. It is still cold here and I currently have all season tires on. When spring comes I am getting some nitto 555's for the rear. Then I can REALLY tell you what I think of them.

I am overly excited though.

If it's just oil then don't worry about it. Might want to take some cleaner to them, something like brake or carb cleaner. Make sure there are no chips or wear mars on the face of the teeth. $20 is a damn good deal.

Well I dropped the car off and the mechanic said that the guy I bought them from didn't give me the shim he needed. He said it doesnt come in the bearing kit, and he only needs it for frpp gears. He said it will prolly take him a few tries to get it in perfect with no noise. We shall see.

If your mechanic had all the right tools for the job, he could do it perfectly the 1st time. That's the problem with most shops and gear installs, they try to do it the easiest way. If he had a pinion depth gauge, which all real shops use for gear installs, he'd have no problems at all. Shims are shims. He's trying to take a shortcut.

I can understand if it's a buddy, buddy, installing in the garage not to use the pinion depth gauge, but seriously..............

He called it a a pinion shim.

He said all gears minus the frpp gears have a number on the pinion to know where to set it.

Anyways. They were installed and I got the car back.

I FREAKIN LOVE the 4.10's. They are ridiculous!

He broke a sensor while changing the gears though and now wants to charge me 100 bucks to have it fixed >_>

I'd tell him to kiss my rosy red ***!!! If its something HE broke during install, then HE is responsible for the replacement and installation cost of the sensor

He tried to tell me that no mechanic would have been able to remove it without it breaking. He said he tried a ton of different things to remove it but it just wasnt coming out. He stated that it was completely and totally impossible to remove because of the massive amount of corrosion.

I'm gonna have to call bullshit on him. Any mechanic worth a **** would have been able to remove it without breaking it. I'd go back to the shop where you had it done and try to speak with either his boss, or even the shop owner, and tell them that when you brought in the car, the sensor wasn't broken, when you got it back it was. Plain and simple the shop is responsible for it.

I find that hard to believe, nothing on a car is nearly impossible. I don't know how the ABS senors come out, but you could probably use a impack gun. When I did my clutch the O2sensors (I think, the ones on the side of the exhaust) were really really hard to get out, but I still managed to. I'm pretty sure mine have been thru a lot more then your car has, but I may be wrong. and by all means I'm no where near a mechanic.

Oh lol, well ****. I just read your other thread about him being somewhat of a friend. That kinda sucks, but all the same, I'm actually very good friends with my mechanic, and if he broke some **** while doing work on my car, first of all, i don't think he would try to charge me to fix/replace it, but if he did, i'll reiterate my previous statement... friend or not, I'd point out the fact that it wasn't broken when i brought the car to him, and was broken when i got it back, and bottom line... its his responsibility to fix it, not mine. IMO, its quite unprofessional on his part to try and charge you to fix something he broke. Good luck with it though cousin.

Now that you put it that way, I would have to agree. Unless he's been doing stuff to your car for free, but with you buying the parts.

The funny part is this: He hasn't charged me yet for the gear install, he told me to try them out for the weekend before I come back in and get the sensor fixed. So, what if I refuse to pay him because he broke my sensor and wont fix it?

In my experience if old parts break during routine maintenance whether you are installing new parts it is the customer who has to cover the labor and parts. Unless, something that the mechanic is not taking apart breaks than it would be on the shop.

Me, my reluctor (ABS) rings broke during my rear axle rebuild. I had to pay because mine broke while being removed from the stock axles. Now, if the same shop broke something on my exhaust or transmission than I wouldnt be liable for those damages as they were not supposed to be performing maintenance on those parts of my car. These are my ethics on this subject.
