Default Wheel bearing removal

Well I haven't had to do brakes since I got the mustang so I have never fooled with the rotors or bearings on it yet. So I have recently been hearing a kinda popping sound when I am turning at low speeds. It was a nice day today and I have had a bad vacum hose running into my fender well that I have been putting off reacement of. So I took the tire off (with my rechargeable impact wrench that I got for Christmas and pulled the inner liner off. While I had the tire off I thought I would pop the wheel bearings off and give them some fresh grease. Well the cap clearly says "do not adjust, do not remove, permanantly lubricated" so I decide to pop the cap off and take everything apart. The top bolt in the brake caliper has a rubber cap on it that didn't pull off for me. And I couldn't budge the bearing nut with the pliers I was using. Didn't have a socket big enough so I grabbed me some wax paper rolled up a big glob of grease in it and like I was about to dress a cake with icing and injected it in between the bearings. So I'm sure that was pretty pointless but I did it anyway. To get to the point.......is there really no reason to repack these bearings like the cap says? And did I just not spend enough time trying to take the nut off or is it suppose to be a bitch. And what is the deal with the rubber cap on the caliper bolt?

well i dunno wat ur asking but to change front bearings u have to buy a whole hub assembly... the popping could be a ball joint.. better get it checked.

in 95 or so, Ford swapped from the wheel bearings we're all used to, that you can remove and repack to a completely sealed hub unit that you have to purchase as a whole from Ford. They go bad more than they should. I had to replace them in my '02 at 45k miles - my '95 has 90k on it and they're fine. As far as using pliers to get the nut off, I want to say the nut is torqued to 220 Ft/lbs when installing.

I just did a wheel hub on mine a few days ago to replace a bad wheel bearing. Really easy job, takes 20 minutes.

Once you get the wheel off, take the brake caliper and bracket off and set them out of the way. Take the rotor off. Remove the spindle nut dustshield off by prying it with a screwdriver. The nut is 36mm, and is torqued to 258ft lbs, so pliers ain't gonna do it. Take the nut off, pull the hub off, mine took a couple taps from a mallet, and it popped off. Put the new one back on, ALWAYS use a new spindle nut, they are not reuseable, plus it's $8 insurance, don't be cheap. Torque to 258ft. lbs, and then put the dustcap back on, put the brakes back on, bolt the wheel on, and roll out.

The bearings are sealed like a roller skate or skateboard bearing, so all you did was make a mess............. lol
