short shifter question
Ok, What is the best one to buy and how will this add on improve the performance of my stang or is it just cosmetic

It's on my wish list, or my damn I'm so broke I can't afford to pay attention but I want this stuff list. |
i have a steeda and to be honest the one thatwas on my car before seemed a lot shorter but it was thrown away and have no idea what it was. it gives you faster shift times from the reduced throw, helps you find 3rd and 4th easier and makes it look good.

Any aftermarket shifter is good. just pick one you like and go for it.
|
Thanks for the feed back
|
I like my MGW, I've never tried a different aftermarket shifter though. I love how short the throw is, precise, fluid, and sure. To bang through the gears it's just 'click, click, click' and your in third. I've never had a problem with a heel-toe down shift. Gave a friend a ride that had a B&M or something shifter and he said that mine was shorter and just felt better overall.

Hurst FTW. Looks the best (nothing like a chrome stick and white ball for that retro flare), adjustable neutral spring, multiple sticks available, and a OEM supplier. Again though, there is very little difference between all the good manufacturers, just pick one you like.

MGW ftw (you can always buy a different ball bassman..)

I gotta vote for PRO 5.0. I've had a Hurst, and Summit Racing shifter, but the PRO 5.0 has been the best by far. I just swapped the handle and ball off of an old Hurst, and it looks and works great.http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/P1010807.jpghttp://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/P1010813.jpg

the factory shifter and the aftermarket shifter are the same other then the bushings, the only thing that makes it a "short throw" is the length of the shifter arm, in other words if you install a shorter arm on the factory shifter you have a short throw shifter just not as good.

I beg to differ, friend. the length of throw is not determined by just the handle. the "throw" in a shifter is the distance between gears in the shifter itself. That distance is greatly reduced by using an after market piece. If you take a stock shifter, with stock handle, and compare it to an after market shifter with stock handle, you will notice the shortened throw. Its hard to explain in words, but I'll try. Lets say that on a stock shifter the movement distance from neutral to a gear is 1" travel. On a "short-throw" shifter, that movement distance is reduced to, say, 1/2". You get that good, fast, solid, shift feel as you run through the gears.

Very true, if not y would you pat almost $200 for a new shifter when you could find a way to cut off your stock shifter.

if thats what you believe then believe it, you cannot change anything but the length of the shifter arm, the shifters stock and aftermarket have the exact same travel, or it wouldn't work, you cannot change the travel in the transmission, only the length of the shifter arm defines it as a shortshifter.
Quicker, More Positive Shifts. The Roush 5-Speed Short Shifter reduces shifting travel by 55% to provide quicker, more positive shifts and gets rid of that sloppy feeling that many stock factory shifters have. the reason its called a short shifter is because there is less distance to throw it into each gear. Trust me i drove 3 gt's before i bought this one. A roush with the short shift kit, a stock gt and then my gt that has a pro 5.0 shift kit. The pro 5.0 was night and day compared to the other 2 mustangs. Just because you shorten the length of the handle, doesn't mean you don't have to shift as far. You are still shifting the same distance as if you had the stock telephone pole of a shifter. Think about it, why in gods name would a shorter arm cost 180 bucks+?? |
part of the price comes from what it's made of I think
Shifter assembly is completely machined from aircraft grade aluminum and all billet components are hard coat anodized for a lifetime of service. All steel components are aircraft grade stainless steel. But I have to agree, it's not just handle length |

I think maybe we're talking about two different things. The mechanisms within the transmission are a constant. It is true that you cannot change those. However, the shifting mechanism can be changed. Think of the base of the shifter as a fulcrum of leverage and the handle(length) of the arm as a whole used to shift the gears. If you move fulcrum up or down, or add length to one side or the other, different amount of movement and forces are needed to cause a change, as in shift the gears.

im not going to waste my energy to tell you what a douchebag you sound like for thinking you know all. Don't see why you have to get your shit tied up in a knot just because i said i think your wrong. Don't forget we are all on the same team here.

i have a hurst short throw shifter and it is a world of difference between that and stock..i dont have any fancy chrome shifter with white ball..
i personally have a hurst short throw base, mgw blue shifter arm, and stock knob and it looks like stock. i wouldnt have it any other way. i honestly love how it feels in my hand. not too far to push into first, and just perfect to rest my arm on in 4th. i wish i had a photo of my interior....but its hard to do with the stang 150 miles away... :-( |
anyone know if i can attach any arm/handle to the pro 5.0? It is kinda short, but its not any issue i just want a longer one maybe.

wow, anyway now what I need to know is is it hard to install a short sifter? Will I need to drop the trans, or can you do it from the inside of the car. After removing the console.
|
work is done from inside the car, NO tranny removal. Its really too easy. took me about 30 mins, while drinking a beer and BS'n with a buddy.

Im not trying to stir shit, this was copied and pasted from the Hurst web site. This is the shifter for the 3650 trans.
http://www.hurst-shifters.com/images...mon/spacer.gifBILLET/PLUS SHIFTERhttp://www.hurst-shifters.com/images...mon/spacer.gifhttp://www.hurst-shifters.com/images...mon/spacer.gifHurst Billet/Plus Shifters incorporate a high ratio pivot mechanism for reduced shifter throw and are sturdily constructed for a more positive precise feel when shifting. Self centering alignment improves 2nd to 3rd up-shift gear changes to reduce the chance of “missed shifts”. Patented adjustable bias spring loads on most models allow stick tension to be tailored to drivers preference. Dedicated applications assure a custom fit and eliminate any vehicle modifications for ease of installation. |

unscrew the shift ball, and you've got to use a little force to snap off that piece of the console. be careful because the leather boot is connected to that piece, and unfortunatly is attached by flimsy and easy to break snaps. also, depending on the year, your cigarette lighter is in that console but is connected by some wires that have some slack, so just pull the piece out a little and disconnect the lighter. good luck and enjoy! |
