Default Gears?

New to the forum and had a question. Once I return from overseas I will be putting new gears in my 06 Mustang GT. After reviewing the boards the most common gear change seems to be to a 4.10. But I recently also read a thread that said if you are planning on adding a supercharger (which I am) the car becomes somewhat undriveable. Would a lower gear be more appropriate for the supercharger? This car is a daily driver.

You could drive it with 4:10 gears but some people find it more manageable with 3:55 of 3:73 gears. For 5spds its usually reccommended to go with 3:73 gears.

It depends on the person also and what blower setup you get. If you are getting a Kenny Bell I would say 3.73's would be a better choice. If you are getting a centri setup like Procharger or Vortec then 4.10's would be good to keep it in the upper rpms for max boost.

But it also depends on what can you live with.

Ok, then I guess the question is what kind of differences in the ride could I expect from stock to 4.10?

BTW I am thinking about going with a Roush Stage 3 blower.

Heres some of the best advice you'll get. Ask this question to people that actually have a blower and aftermarket gears. Dont take advice from people who dont have first hand experience with this and just give advice based on what they read on the internet.

Friends v6 with 3.73's and a centri blower was not geared enough to really get it going. 4.10's would of been better. Another friend had 4.10's with a Procharger on his GT, much better for getting to the power band and higher rpms to get boost. Friend with a roots has 3.55's and wants 4.10's so for most of the cars I have been in they either have 4.10's or wish they had done them instead of what they have.

I have a Kenne Bell on my '04 Cobra and I have 4:10 Gears in it.....Yea sometimes it's hard to get down, but you just learn to handle it. I've had 3:73's and 3:90's and both were still just too slow for me. I would never change from 4:10's unless you had over 600+ hp, which you won't get from the RoushCharger, unless you get the R2300 kit and even then you probably won't go over 550hp. I'd ask someone with a Stage 3 and see what they say....

I have 4.10's, no supercharger and don't plan on supercharging my car, so I can't give you any noteworthy advice other than I love my 4.10's and wouldn't change them out unless completely necessary.

However, there is a guy/administrator on the allfordmustangs.com forums named sltwagon who has a built and supercharged '05 and I believe he has 4.10's. If you signed up there and made a thread asking this same thing there, he would most likely reply to it.

This article explains gears on a supercharged Mustang very well.

Not much. The car will pull a bit harder in 1st and 2nd. You will have to shift a little sooner. The difference is like 2-300 rpms sooner than you do now becuase the engine will rev quicker. Your top speed in 4th gear will be reduce to 110-112mph by redline. I though that going from 3.27 to 4.10 would make the car a lot more faster than it did. If your going for a twin screw blower anyway, just save your money for the Roushcharger you mentioned or I'd recommend a Kenne Bell. Then if the kick isn't enough for you, you can do the gears. You may be perfectly satisfied with the blower and stock gears.

i had 3.73s in mine but that was with 150 shot of nitrous...it would have been faster with 4.10s on motor but with the silly torque in a bottle that comes from nitrous, 3.73's were just fine

Wait until your beast is born to decide on the gears. Give it a go for a while with the stock gears in combo with the supercharger. You should think about a clutch swap before you go with the rear gear swap. Go with a nice clutch setup, after the supercharger, to keep the stock clutch from possibly slipping. I'm deployed in iraq...where you at?

Anywhere from $150-500 it really depends on where you go. All I would say is call around to many shops to get quotes before you do anything.

I am in the process of getting my buddy who is looking after my Mustang to have the supercharger put on. So yeah, I will drive it a bit before my final decision. I have four months to go in Saudi Arabia. Iraq was better than this place in many ways. I am bored out of my skull.

this is one of my track buddies who is stationed out here with me but at a NATO base. i only see him at the strip.

post supercharger dude was running 12.9's on slicks on a track that is 1300 ft in elevation and uphill with no VHT to help us stick to the ground. he is running 4.10's with a saleen TS on the same slicks kept blowing the tires and he wasnt powershifting to endless runs of 13 second passes. i never ran at the track straight off the autobahn where i was averaging 130-140 MPH i dropped air pressure to 13 psi put the helmet on and ran a time of 12.6. he was pissed and started to blame his 4.10's...after i looked at his slips i told him it wasnt his gears i told him he was losing lots of time with his shifts. once he got the car to hook he started to powershift and eventually ran a 12.30 i couldnt go faster than a 12.5 with a 1.8 60 ft at a pathetic 107 mph in a 400 hp car...

i would run away from the roush charger and go for a whipple, kenne bell or the saleen.

good luck with whatever you decide

i would just worry about the 1/4 mile trap speed and where 4th gear will be. i top 3rd in my auto with 3.73's when i ran her at atco and cecil county which was 115 on a 26" tire. i have taken my car to a top speed of 173 MPH on the autobahn a few times scary as **** but cool as **** with 911 turbo's running next to you. **** my friend has 4.30's in his 04 cobra IRS swapped GT with a viper spec T56...we easily took his car to 188 in a convertible

so i dont think gear really affect top speed...sure you will run a few more RPMs cruising on the highway but **** it you got a fast muthafuggin car.
