Default 8.8 Rear End Question

On an 02 GT 5 speed rear end there is a big chunck of weight that bolts to the bottom of the rear end housing. What purpose does this serve? Can it be removed or is it important? I thought maybe it was there so if you missed the possum with the front crossmember, this would finish him off. Thanks Bubba

driveline damper, most people remove it for weight reasons, I think it weights @12lbs (iirc) and if you do remove it, make damn sure you re-attach the upper stamped steel mounting brkt, as it serves as the contact point for the rear pinion snubber..............

I may be thinking of something else but don't you use this as a jack point for the raising the rear of the car?

That's what I though until when I tried, it started to bend as weight was applied to it. The first and last time I did that.

We must be talking about different parts. I've jacked mine up many times using the spot I'm thinking about.
