AC Recharging

AC Recharging
I need to get my AC recharged for my Lexus. Is there any way I could just buy the freon and do it myself? This shop wants $135 to do it, but im sure I could do it for cheaper than that. The pipes are all fine, this is just a 9 year old car that needs some new freon.
Any tips/knowhow/omgwtfbbq? I sure could use the advice.

Is the system completely empty? If it is you need to evacuate the ac system. There is a machine that hooks up to sevice port which removes all the air in the system and creates a vacuum. When you go to charge the system it will suck in the freon.

i did this with my mazda. the big key is that your system is still pressurized, meaning that there is still vacuum.
you can buy one of those recharging deals from pep boys or the local auto parts store, complete with the guage to check the pressure. since my car is equipped with r134a, it was pretty easy to hook up and then pop a 12oz can to it and refill to spec.

I dont think it was a leak...the thing hadnt been charged in its lifetime and it wasnt used over the winter, which means it was just kinda left there and all the freon kinda went poof.
The gauge would tell you if there was a leak as well, but it didnt show anything, all it needed was to have a quick kick in the ***.
