parking brake light

when i turned my car on this afternoon the parking brake light came on, and then it would turn on and off frequently when i was driving to work, and then on my way home from work it just stayed on. whats causing the parking brake light to turn on?

Are you talking about the red light on the dash????

Probably low break fluid.

Another possibility if the dash light is on is that considering the cold weather lately, your brake lines could have froze. The same thing happens to my dad's F-150. Just make sure your brakes are disengaged by engaging/disengaging it until the light goes away.

most likley low brake fluid becouse you brakes have worn down just add a little fluid will go right away

is it ok to mix different brands of brake fluid or do i have to bleed the brake system and then put the new fluid in?

flyinfox 02-03-2007 10:53 AM

it is ok do mix diffrent brands but not diffrent dot like dot 3 and dot 4 don't mix

i bought some high performance brake fluid that exceeds dot 3 and dot 4 and is compatible with conventional brake fluid, i dont think the brake fluid has been changed since the car was manufactured in 98, so is it ok to mix with that or should i just go ahead and replace the fluid

DOT 3 and 4 do mix, it's DOT 5 that you can't mix with the others since it's silicone based rather than glycol based.

i added more brake fluid and its filled to the max line but my parking brake light in the dash is still on.

Check your parking brake. If you leave it out in the cold, water in the cable freezes preventing it from disengaging. If it doesn't go away w/ repeditive enaging/disengaging to break the freeze, try readjusting your parking brake.

how do i readjust my parking brake?

bassman97 02-04-2007 10:43 AM

That I can't help you with since I only know how to do it on my car since it's self-adjusting. I believe you do it at the equailer bar though, where the 2 cables meet before the handle.
