I've run one without for awhile now but your right you need a heat sheild.
I've come up with a idea I havent got time to do yet but it involves taking a sheet of metal the size of the filter and theres a bolt with a bushing that I threw out that Would be perfect for it to hang over. I wish I had more time to work on things like this.

Its a shield that covers the part of the filter that is close to the engine. Helps keep the filter from sucking in super hot air and helps pull in more cooler fresh air from the inlet. You can purchase alot of dif heat shields on ebay that are ok and ready to use. Or just look at some pics of them and make one yourself. I did the same thing you are interested in to my my MAC cai, and fabbed a nice heat shield out of a few brackets and black plastic. Of course i eventually replaced it with the K&N FIPK for the better looks, no difference in performance from the fenderwell to modded MAC and then to the FIPK. Only thing the FIPK intake pipe stays cooler during hot laps and hard driving.
Just my 2 cents
