Is $1,000 too high for cam and spring installation?

I was quoted $1,000 (excluding any type of tuning) for cam and spring installation. Is this too high?

i got quoted anywhere from $650+ thats why i have chosen 2 install myself

Is that just labor?? If so, I would say that is outrageous. I did the work myself and never had a quote with anyone, but after doing it myself, I can't see it being worth $1000, as long as you have the tools and ability to do it yourself. It is really not that difficult.

ya i havent installed the cams yet, but i have taken off everything needed just waiting to put in and reinstall everything and it has been suprisingly easy......no bolts that are impossible to get to or any bolts that wont come out everything has gone smooth so far

Don't jinx yourself.

Haha exactly. I cant even count how many people post back to terrible stories after cam installs. Its not hard to do, but there is a right and wrong way, its easy to screw up, and its time consuming.

Modular Powerhouse charges ~$1100 for cam and spring install. So Id say thats how much you should expect to pay.

Damn you changed your avatar. I'm so used to seeing the same avatar for certain people that when they get a new one, I'm thinking it's a new member! lol

$1000 for cams and spring install? That is right in line with what a shop charges. If the shop is good and warranties their work, I think $1000 is in line.

I saw a guy at the track a few years ago. Put cams in all by his little 'ol self and the motor blew on the first run.

I would add, however, that if you are going to pay for a cam install, might as well consider poprting your heads at the same time. That way you only pay for the labor once to install the heads.

i was quoted $300 for a cam/springs and torque converter install from a guy on tidewaterracing forums. $1000 seems alittle much to me.

csledd 12-28-2006 09:43 PM

no way in hell i'd do cams and valvesprings for 300 dollars, lol. 650 is resonable to me

Probably some guy in his garage. I wouldnt have some Joe Schmo install my cams, springs, and converter.

Has he ever done those installs before, how is he going to do the cam install? Will he do it the wrong quick way, or the right way? Will he time the engine like hes supposed to? What happens if something goes wrong, is he going to pay for replacement parts? Doesnt sound like a good idea to me.

BTW, what converter did you get?

TClark22 12-29-2006 07:10 AM

GET THEM CAMS MARC!!! lol i would help you install but i dont want to be responsible for your motor blowing...so i say just have a shop do it

who did you get that quote from?

r3dn3ck 12-29-2006 08:32 AM

I'd charge you a grand... easy. It takes all fuggin day and it's a PITA besides.

Figure 10hrs of screwing with them at 100 bucks an hour... deal.

03gtmustang 12-29-2006 04:32 PM

Installing a converter is easy too, drop the tranny, slip the converter on, and reinstall everything. But there are a few details here and there that can make it right and wrong.

Supertune.

I think I am just going to go S/C since it is going to cost nearly as much.
