uhh... 4th.... i dunno, i think the ball might have gotten stuck, its supposed to allow enough tranny fluid to engage the clutch right? sounds like that ball might be stuck so not enough fluid is getting to the clutch for it to grab on.... that is a total shot in the dark. My mechanic buddy was explaning how the jmod works. but i still dont know alot. You might want to take everything out and clean the crap out of it. so much as a doghair in it when you reassemble can **** it up. you might not have comprimised is by getting crap in it. go ask this on modular powerhouse too. |
if you dont get a responce tonight, ill print this out and show it to my buddy, he might be able to give some ideas and ill post em tomorrow.

dont know if this helps but here are some things i found when i still had the auto and wanted to do the jmod
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tec...JMOD/index.htm http://www.crownvic.net/tech/4R70Wnotes.pdf |
I didnt remove any of the springs...but I was told it wouldnt matter...could this be the problem
|
Tranny threw a code P1728 Transmission Slip Error...which isnt a good thing because now I know I need to go into the valvebody again...grand...never going to do a J mod again I may just get a new seperator plate and not attempt this....Good thing is its "limp" mode so as long as I grandma drive it will be ok for now
Still need some help on this though:help: |

Did you lose a check ball (you should have 8)? http://www.dndgarage.net/j%20mod11.jpg Did you make sure you replaced the manual valve correctly? http://www.dndgarage.net/j%20mod07.jpg Is everything torqued down correctly and in the right sequence? Did you refill the tranny correctly? Did you drill a wrong hole? Did you debur the holes you drilled? Did you mess with the overdrive survo? You're supposed to remove the springs, but that shouldnt make a difference. And there IS such a thing as cleaning those parts too well and stuff not working right. |
only thing I can think of at the time as it might be is the Manual valve and possibly the o/d servo. other than that I made sure the balls were in and the valve body is clean, cleaned it with brake cleaner and q-tips. Maybe I can entice dustin to check it out with me.
|
You said you didnt remove any springs, so Im not sure why you would mess with the o/d servo.
http://www.dndgarage.net/j%20mod12.jpg I bet the manual valve isnt in the right place or you cleaned things TOO well. |
If I cleaned things too well what would happen.....also I poured some tranny fluid into the valve body before I put everything on.......i'm going to say the Manual valve....I saw my buddy messing with it but didnt see anything he did wrong
|
i have a hard time seeing the manual valve being the problem.

It wasnt him....I had another buddy work with me but I agree I dont think it was that after I think about it....... This wouldnt affect the slippage thats going on and why I dont have 4th |
correct it would make it be in the wrong gear, not slip.
thats an internal problem or elec. problem. |
I may just take it in a get a good old fashion shift kit and let them deal with it....lol
Edit: I did a few test like TCCOA recomended like put it in 2nd at 50mph and if the power dropped to idle i'd have a big problem but power held which is good and that mean the problem is in the main control w/e that means maybe a auto guru can chime in here. Heres the list..... Improper band/clutch application pressure. (Doubt it) Main control assembly gaskets damaged or bolt out of torque. (Most likely) Main control separator plate damaged. (Most likely) Main control solenoid stuck or damaged. (ehhh possibility but doubt it) Overdrive planet assembly damaged. (Doubt it) Overdrive band adjustment incorrect. (Doubt it) Overdrive band friction elements burnt or missing. (Doubt it) Overdrive band cylinder damaged. (Doubt it) And I can get into 4th gear but its a really really ****ty way to get into it. |
I suggest taking everything apart and redoing it.

I just saw you're getting a new separator plate. Did you drill the wrong hole or something? Id like to see the old one.

I havent taken it apart yet. I have a shop that is going to help me out since I fill my nitrous bottle there ALOT. So I will take the old one out and try and take a pic for you. I have a wierd feeling that its a drilled hole. Because I can get into 4th gear when the fluid is cool but when it gets hotter no more 4th gear Hell could be that we messed with a spring or a check ball got stuck. Could be a lot of things right now. But doubt its any thing major Also out of curiousity how important is the squence of torqueing the bolts? |
Hmmm, get that picture for me.

Its very important. In fact, when I called PI to get some help with my converter problems, they asked me to make sure my v/b was torqued down correctly which it was. All of those steps in my directions are there for a reason. If its not torque correctly, then fluid could get in places it shoulnt be getting into. When doing this, the only bolts you dont need to torque exactly are the pan bolts.
|
i dont belive it, i have done over 10 ford 4r70w valve bodys its really not that important. just snug them them go back over them tighting them up. If it was i would of had a problem because of it.
|
You are giving out wrong information Dustin. Go ask Jerry, Alan, Darrin, Johnny Langton, Adam, Matt Hill.... Its very important to torque it correctly. It needs to seal correctly just like anything else with a gasket.
Look at post #13 by dirtyd0g, http://forums.modulardepot.com/showthread.php?t=89630 |
Easy boys I'll be torqueing the bolts to spec did last time and I will do it again. New plate will be here tomorrow.

UPDATE:
Problem still is there I had a pro do the J mod successfully. But still having the issue of the O/D light flashing and going into "failure mode" after a few minutes of driving there is no 4th gear after doing some research were thinking we have a electrical problem here. I dont know where to go from here i'm this close from parting it out and getting a truck. It's VERY AGGRIVATING. I hate this transmission. Worthless piece of crap I swear |
