Default WTF. bad day at work

Started out good, but then after lunch (8PM 2nd shift time). I cut my thumb while slitting some air filter outer wire. ( I slit different widths of wire from a master coil). My fault, no gloves on. Nasty cut too. 8 stitches from the very tip all the way to both sides down to the nail. almost all the way off from my nail to the bottom of the meaty part. ( i'll get pics tomorrow).. I get back to work at 10:30 to do my paperwork and explain what happened to my boss, ( he came in to relieve me while I was getting stitched up). And also the plant manager who was doing the accident report.

One of my new temp employees went to sweep up her area and ventured into the wire machines area. I didn't notice and it's kinda restricted with signs.. Anyway she brusuhes up against a master coil of wire while sweeping. ( Wire has a very sharp and raspy edge).

Well here she comes asking for help cause she cut her hand wide *** open on the wire..

My plant manager is a first responder so he took control and got her to the first aid room.

I'm fcking not believing this **** is happening. 2 bad accidents in 1 day. WTF I'm gonna get my *** reamed at work today, and I'll have a sore *** thumb to boot..

This reminded me of my fun story...

When I was a sophomore in High School, I got my index finger stuck on a brake caliper when spinning the wheel of a car on a lift. Took the whole tip of the finger right off, from knuckle to tip. It was only hanging on by a piece of the bone and the side of the nail. My teacher thought it was funny, show he showed me off to the other auto class while I was in shock from the loss of blood. (he's a dick) So he gave me a 11 band-aids and told me to finish the school day so that he didn't have to file any paperwork. Long story short, got to my math class about 9 mins later and he sent me to the Urgent Care surgery center to try to reattach it. It worked, sort of. No nerves after the last knuckle.

Sorry to hijack your thread. But man, I should really find those photos. My finger was black, the size of a Bozo The Clown's shoes and black, it was pretty gnarly.

Very nice!!! You did a great job, must have been a very sharp blade. Looks to me like u could have used a couple more stitches, they are kinda far apart. But that's just my lowly opinion. Ice down it will keep it from swelling too much and ease the pain. Good Luck at work.

Just got home after my shift. My thumb didn't really hurt too bad, only when I bumped it for about 15 or 20 times. Lol. I took off the bandages and I know why it aint throbbing as it should be. It's numb. I severed the nerves. Good thing for now but if you've ever had a severed nerve, you know what it's like when it grows back over the next year or so. I do. Burning sensations for at least 1 year, then tingling if your lucky. Oh well at least it don't hurt right now..

And yes I got my *** chewed at work by every boss who wanted to chew someone's ***..
I went from hero to zero in less than a second..

Crap happens, man. And I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to the nerves. I got a little bit to come back, but about 3/4s of the last knuckle to the tip of my index finger still has no feeling, this is year three for me since the incident.

Yep, I cut my pinky finger at the 2nd knuckle (the middle one) back in the 80's. Never got full sensation back from that one. It's the one that felt like it was on fire for a year or 2. Glad it was only my pinky though. I think I'm actually lucky this one is the top part of my thumb. Nerve doesn't have grow but maybe 1/4 " inch to reach my epidermus. Anything further down would have to reattach itself to the existing nerve. And there's basically nothing you can do for digits, as far as nerve reattachment surgery. Not worth it, unless it's a multible digit laceration where you would suffer like a 1 legged dog.. Everyone can get by with 1 dead finger, maybe 2. (that would suck). You just gotta learn to live with it.

But dam even with a dead nerve I bet your top index finger hurts like hell when it gets cold.. WTF, lol

Default Update:

Went to the doc today. Thumb should be ok. I could still loose some of it though if I don't take care of it, even after the stitches come out on Friday. Lots of dead tissue here. And the nerves are f-cked.. I'm gonna catch hell for a few months maybe longer just to keep it as a whole..

Here's a new pic. notice the bruised part all they way aroung the pad. That;s the part that might not make it. It's almost like dead meat.

And plus they wanted to give me a final written warning for getting hurt. My manager stepped up and said hell no. He's only gonna 1st written warning for not wearing gloves and my supervisor told them he was responsible for my employee getting cut that same night. ( she just came back to work today).. My surpervisor is a stand up guy. He took part of the hit they wanted to put on me. They really wanted to fire me after 29 years of service to them. That really kinda hurts. I'm finding it hard to give 100% anymore. Just gonna do what I can to make my 8 hrs or 12 if I have to. Not gonna try to be superman anymore..

Ok last update for anyone concerned. Got my stitches out today. It's not healed up real good yet. ( geez) you'd think 10 days would be enough, It was nastier than I thought. Trying to bust back open again, so i gotta be careful with it for a while. lessen learned here. wear my PPE when I'm working dammit. All in all it could've been a lot worse. Life half a thumb would suck badly.. Here's my last pic, Maybe LOL,,

Glad to see that you're healing. It looks like the swelling has gone down a bit, and it looks like you're going to have a gnarly scar. Do you have an feeling in it? Or did you completely severe the nerves?

I have some feeling in the top and but in the middle it's dead feeling. Kind of a dead lump of scar tissue. They'll grow back but it will be a while. I just have to be careful cause if you can't feel something touching it then you are prone to hurting it becuase there will be no reflex reaction to jerk it away. Went through this with my finger before but never with my thumb.. LOL, My wife says I'm below a primate now. Without full use a the thumb..
