Question New Cold Air Intake

I just installed a new BBK Cold Air Intake that I bought from this web site on my 06 Mustang GT. It was easy to install and I immediately noticed an improvement in performance. The problem is that the "check engine" light came on shortly after installation and has not shut off. I was told that it would be a plug and play addition. How can I get rid of the light? I really don't want to take it in to the dealer for servicing. Is this normal?

Thanks for your help!
Martin

So if I really have to get this thing tuned, should I go to the dealer or find another source? I've only had the car a month.

the dealer isnt going to tune your BBK CAI. you should go to a Mustang specific tuner if you can. get a dyno tune, you'll not only lose that CE light, but your CAI will net you more power as well.

Get a SCT Handheld tune. I got mine from VMPtuning.com you can get it from AmericanMuscle.com as well. The other option is a dyno tune

How difficult is it to use one of these tuners for a rokkie like me and how much do they cost? Can I screw anything up if I do something wrong? How do I reset the CEL after I tune it?

you plug it in to the port under the steering wheel and click install (might be located somewhere else on the 05+ but its just the computer port)

EDIT: thats if you get a custom tune which you probably should it will be more benefit than just turning off the light. It will cost you around 350-400 most likely

true but SCT has much better software and many more features that you can change in your tune (more advanced). Many shops nationwide also favor SCT so you have the best chance of getting a good tune going from them.

Marty, don't feel like you did anything wrong either. Ford made the new mustang computers really sensitive to changes, all the really good CAI's for 05+ stangs come with a tuner. I would get a tuner, be it SCT or diablo. In the long run it will come in handy. You can change gear ratios, turn off certain items and change shifts points (auto's only) and many more things as well. What I would do is call your local dyno tuning shop, find out what brand they deal with and go with it. You dont want to buy a diablo only to find out your local guy only does sct.

w/ both SCT and Diablo you can go to there site and find a dealer near you. Some of those dealers are dyno shops. So if you find a dyno shop from that list you know which tuner to buy.

I just spoke to American Muscle and they insist that I either have a leak or a faulty connection. They say that the intake that they sold me doesn't need tuning. I for the life of me can't find the problem they are talking about. The installation can't be any easier. I'm gonna end up getting it tuned anyway. I suppose it can't hurt and it should help me identify the problem, I hope!

Last time I spoke to someone at AM about a master bearing kit from motive with timken bearings, they told me that it wasn't made anymore. And that if someone said they had it there where lieing. I called motive gear directly, and what did they say.....ta da....they DO make that bearing kit still. the part number has a T at the end. so much for people at AM being on the ball. So i bought it from somewhere else and all the bearings where stamped timken.

It's possible that they started making it again because the demand was so high. Our purchasing manager was told that they stopped making it with Timken stuff. We're pretty on the ball with everything, so...yeah.

Hmm...The BBK CAI doesn't generally need a tune, which is why it says that on the website. Apparently, though, 1 in every, like, 20,000 Mustangs has a computer that will kick the check engine light on. And it does require a tune. We're working on getting more information about that, and about how to identify if your car is one of those rare ones.

Are you sure the light is from the CAI? It could be from a lot of sources.. LOL. Once my light came on cuz my gas cap was lose. Talk about racking your brain trying to find something. LOL Take it to Auto Zone and have them run the code to see what it says... thats how I found out about my gas cap. I thought I had a vacume leak at first. Just something to check out is all.

Make sure all your connections are tight and fully secure. Make sure your MAF is clean if you touched the wire inside the MAF then most likely thats why because they are very sensitive and if you touched it you screwed it up. Otherwise get it scanned for the code to get a better idea of whats wrong.

When you install a CAI on an 05+ stang you need to get it tuned, simple as that. Unless you bring it to some hack shop, a custom dyno tune will be better then a mail order tune.

Marty- I see you live in NJ. Contact Matt Hill at 856-455-5224.

Did you find out what the code is that's being thrown?

The X3 is still really really new, so give SCT a call and see if they've had any reports of defective units. We haven't heard anything here, but all unit problem questions go right to them...
