Hey All...patience only past this point!

Okay I recently purchased what I believe to be a stock 1994 Mustang GT Conv. from my stepfather. All I really know about it is that the transmission was recently rebuilt, and even that I have NO details about. Now, I love this little car, shes a real beauty...and she runs like nothing I have ever driven before. There are just a few problems, first off I am a great big KNOW-NOTHING when it comes to cars...before this stang came into my life I drove a 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan, and had no interest in anything except the audio system...but now, I want my car to be everything she can be. SO I start reading all of these tech articles about heads and cams and exhaust and all this other stuff....COME ON GUYS I AM A ROCKET SCIENTIST NOT A MECHANIC!!!! The other big issue is that I am a full-time college student with little (almost no) income...but money won't stand in the way! What i am looking for is a nice patient person to kinda guide me through familiarizing myself with my car...and then (via email) assisting me in the begining performance mods...I have the Haynes repair manual, but again, its all greek to me. I really want her to purr...and make those other little guys on the road jealous....or at least make them take a second look...anyone willing to help? I figure performance first, then esthetics eh? Thanks a lot!

What kind of car wash do you use? Those suds look all soft and cuddly lol. Anyways, I would suggest you start off with exhaust and then work your way up from there. Take a look at the site's store at some basic bolt ons that arn't too pricey for your taste. There is a lot of things to choose from and this site offers some of the best all out prices I've ever seen.

Alright so exhaust...since the post I have read a little bit and now understand the importance of a K&N air filter or CAI system (Cold air is better riiight?)...whew, that was an experience...can u break down the exhaust mods...most important first, or what not. As far as the car wash that stuff is a triple protection coat for road tars and stuff like that, it comes out all colorful and is almost as much fun as airbrushing plastic models...thanks for the advice, I look forward to hearing more!

Also, if I go with the Cold Air Induction Kit how difficult is it to install? Does it take a lot of body mods or does it pretty well fit into the car? Would it be better for me to do it, or for it to be professionaly done, or should I drop that whole theory and just go K&N and call it good enough? I am ready to purchase the CAI system off of ebay at one fellow mustangateers advice....oooo I am getting a little excited, I almost understand what I am talking about!

It depends on what you are looking for as well. If you want a basic bolt on the CAI is a good way to start. It will deliver denser cold air into your engine and you will generally see a 8-15 hp diffference but don't quote me on that. You won't really be able to feel it since its just one of many mods that will add up to make a difference. As for exhaust goes. If you want your car to sound like a beast exhausts will really help you open up your cars power. What I would start out with for exhaust would be to pick out a cat-back system which will have all the necessary hardware for it to function and you will pick up more hp and torque as well as a deep tone exhaust sound or whatever type of sound you are looking for. The SLP Loudmouth cat back system seems to be popular among these forums and you can go to the videos section of this forum and download a few clips to hear what it would sound like (For me I have to right click the files and click "save as" to view some of the files). Or if you want to save some money and don't think you need to replace your entire cat back you can just get some performance mufflers with an off road X or H pipe or if your area has restrictions over the sound and or pollution you may want to get them catted.

There are A LOT of knowledgable people on this forumn who know a great deal more than me but I'll help you out as much as I can for now since I came to this forum too to try to get as much information as I could. CAI or exhaust would be a good first mod if your looking for some power.

Alrighty, first mod is in process, I have purchased the cold air intake system from Bomz Racing Inc. as a christmas present for my mustang...its just too bad I won't be able to install it for about a week (shipping blah blah) anyway...now I need information on the install, it will just bolt on correct? I shouldn't need to mod in anyway and it will not be affected by the GT body kit correct? Any advice will be greatly appreciated...thanks for all the help so far!

Well, if it were me, Id go with a cat back and midpipe first. The cat back is the exhaust system. If you dont care about every last horsepower, just have a local muffler shop weld in some flowmaster mufflers. Well, go to www.mustangexhaust.com and listen to all the sounds. Its a preference thing. Then Id put on a new mid pipe, which is what you read about when people say H pipe, X pipe. They come in 2 versions. Off road, which has no catalytic converters, or the Emissions legal version, with cats. The off road will be louder, and will make the exhaust note deeper. Then Id probably suggest you put in a new set of rear end gears. This is a more expensive undertaking as you wont be able to do the labor yourself. The gear sets come in different ratios such as 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10 being some of the most popular choices. I believe for your year, the 3.73 is the best choice as It wont cause you to rev too high, but will make a substantial difference.
The gear set will run about 150 bucks depending on where you get it from, and the installation is anywhere from 200-500 bucks depending on who does it. You will feel a lot from this mod.
Also, the 5.0 has a lot of free mods such as bumping the timing, but Id suggest you leave that to someone who knows how to use a timing light, so try and find someone in your area who knows how to do this. Also, underdrive pulleys are supposedly a good mod for the 5.0 motor. Then if you want, you can delve into the engine with things such as heads, cam, and and intake. Youll want to read up on the car more before attempting things like this. I found a lot of my info on places like Stangnet.com and Corral.net. (Sorry Chris ) Just read is all I can tell you. Bookstores usually sell a lot of books that explain this stuff in more detail so buy one and buy the latest issues of Muscle Mustangs and Fast fords and 5.0 Mustang Magazines. They do a lot of tech articles that may help. Hope this has helped and hasnt been too long to read, Good Luck and welcome to the lifestyle, and a warning, once the Mod Bug gets you, its hard to shake off.

I have a 1995 GT 5.0

Biggest mistake your going to have is finding out that you just spent about 150.00 - 200.00 on a go fast part and realized it did nothing....So my best advise is going to be injoy the Car while she still runs normal.. Unless you have the money to take it to some of the Tuners that cost $$ to get everything in working order and all the right parts to work together all at once....Most of us pretty much are piecing our cars together paycheck to paycheck so some mods would have to wait for others to be finished before ever getting the chance to install the ones we bought to put on in the first place...Hince a never ending money pit....Or as i like to call it never ending Project...So now i have bummed you out a lil bit lets find out what you dream about...First you must figure as to what kinda Mustang your looking to Build??..
Restoration?..<---is for old people...Joken
Corner hugger?..<--- Fun but not a lot of attention
How about that 10sec. 1/4 mile street strip <---seems to be one on every coner..but you find yourself single and in debt trying to keep from the temptation of not breaking anything evertime you find your self at a light next to that IMPORT...I would be a lier if i said i know nothing about this...

So here is my 2 pennys worth...look at what you have and dig deep into your pockets and see what kinda project you can afford to build..look around at some of the other stangs in thes clubs and find somthing that catches your eye weather street strip.. What i would do is not worrie so much about that motor and HP till you do alot---ALOT--- of research as to what exactly your getting your self into...because once you start it's a never ending battle of where can i make more...and the more you make the more you spend on just kepping it from leaving you on the side of the road with no clue as to what the hell is that making that noise....1994 1995 Cars have a mind of there own as to excepting modifications so be aware of what you put on and expect to learn fast as to do a quick ajustment or two to keep her running...They don't do well with after market horse power parts much less ones that don't match up..

Exhaust is preffrence as to how you want it to sound keep your windows cracked and you'll find that sound that catches your ear..Remember those new Mustangs have 4.6 MOD motors so chances are if your looking for that Tone your never going to catch it with the 5.0 motor.. And i waved many people down just to find out what was making that beautifull sound till i gound the system i wanted to try...if you dont'y like it and want to change later down the road you can always sell it...

If i could do it all over again i would make it look the way i wanted it to.!!! Then go for some go fast parts....Some sites have a parts review section might be a good idea to find the bad with the good before you buy...So..

Get your a Exhaust going to keep you pleased going down the road..
Next try a Gear..
Get the body the way you want with some wheels and tires
Lowering springs and injoy for a while till your ready to go deeper into your wallet...

LOL Thank you thank you, no applause...LOL Just kidding, and to think im only 17. But really, just read anything and everything. Like SNY said, you have to have a plan, or youll just go in circles and buy stuff twice and all that. One good example I can give is underdrive pulleys, if you ever plan on supercharging the car, skip them and save the money, because you will just have to take them back off and try to sell them, losing the 140 bucks you could have saved for the supercharger. Its all about patience and planning. Good luck man. SNY, show us some pics man. :icon_king

i totally agree about howstuffworks.com, ive gone there and have read many of the articles, one i find rather interesting would be horsepower and torque (the whole tq x rpm / 5252 = hp, at that same RPM) so anyhow, i am also 17 and believe i know a good deal about these cars... kinda hard when you get into the crazy computer things, but its simple to just say 'it adjusts ___ according to the reading of ___' and leave it at that, lol. :tongue8:
