WHAT HEADLIGHTS!?!

I am in sort of a rush to buy and install headlights before winter comes here in Michigan. I have a forest green 95 gt convertible. I feel the head lights are worn seeing as they were put in the car 14 years and 2 days on my mustangs birthday. So here is the major question.

Which is better, some after market standard replacement headlights(with upgraded bulbs), or projector headlights!?

I have heard mixed reviews from both sides and would like to get opinions from people that have them on their stang.

I need something that produces some very bright light(no, as of right now if I got standard I don't wanna dish out more for the extra $$$ for HID)

Please let me know your opinions!!

These are the ones I am looking at: http://www.americanmuscle.com/9498-c...hts-amber.html

Lazerred6 10-06-2008 12:37 PM

Don't go with projectors but I'm biased I have the direct replacment ones and love them I have the ones with clear corners though and HID but I saw noticable improvment with just replacing the headlights and upgrading my bulbs.

By the way welcome to the forum where in Michigan are you from

here are the ones I have http://www.americanmuscle.com/muclhecst4pc.html

mustangman95gt 10-06-2008 12:48 PM

ya i forgot to add that with the standard replacements i am going to upgrade the bulbs. thanks for the welcome, i am from rochester hills, i see you are in grand rapids so you probably know where that is

Lazerred6 10-06-2008 12:54 PM

yeah I do know where that is.

I know how you feel about the stock headlights on the sn95s too I couldn't stand mine once they got all yellow and cloudy.

When I got my new headlights with some lumica bulbs there was a big difference but I still wanted more so I went with the HIDs

mustangman95gt 10-06-2008 12:57 PM

I figure if I don't go projector(which I havent heard an extremely convincing reason yet) I will eventually add HID.

Lazerred6 10-06-2008 01:07 PM

I can't say I have ever seen a pair of projectors that I liked on a mustang

Here is an idea of what the change will be during the day

I chose the "standard" option. Projector headlights just suck, unless they were put in by the factory. The "projectors" offered for Mustangs are just a joke, they're usually weak ass halogen bulbs with the round glass cover to get the "projector" effect. Basically what I'm saying is that they suck, don't get them.

Personally I would get a set of Cobra headlights from B.O.I. and a set of Sylvania Silverstar bulbs, headlights & turn signals. Silverstars are the brightest/ whitest halogen bulb available currently. Also, don't waste your money on the "Ultra's" as they have no real differance from the regular Silverstars other than the price. The Sylvania side marker bulbs appear blue/ purple in regular sunlight, but glow amber just like a regular orange bulb, but brighter. This is only an asthetic touch so that you don't get that weird orange tint behind the corner light.

No matter who you get your lights from, make sure you get some clear all weather silicone and seal the crap out of them, because if you don't you'll be right back where you are in no time flat.

mustangman95gt 10-06-2008 02:06 PM

thats what i figured about projectors. they look too importy for a mustang

M_Stang 10-06-2008 02:13 PM

yes they do
I went with the Black replacements
with ultra white bubls
looks good i think
take a look at my profile

Steeda97 10-06-2008 02:47 PM

Flynnster 10-06-2008 05:53 PM

are the ones venom has the ones i have the link for in my post at the top? chrome with amber?

spike_africa 10-07-2008 06:24 AM

Both of the ones listed are not good looking. I do like the cobra clear ones posted above.

mustangman95gt 10-07-2008 09:08 AM

the cobra clear ones are the exact same as the ones i listed but the corners are chrome too not amber. my dad has a connection at ford racing parts and he is sending a catalog home with him tonight and told me to look for whatever i want and he will hook me up

Lazerred6 10-07-2008 09:56 AM

In my opinion clear corners are better than the amber

mustangman95gt 10-07-2008 10:38 AM

something like this? http://www.americanmuscle.com/muclhecst4pc.html

or the B.O.I. ones?

mustangman95gt 10-07-2008 10:46 AM

now the focus seems to have changed... get all chrome ones, or get the ones from the top the chrome with amber corners, or should i just go with the all chrome, get the silverstar corner lights and call it a day? where can i get the corner lights at and what size/type would i need for my 95 gt? i also have to see what is in store for me when i get the ford racing parts catalog tonight because i may get some lights as a "gift"

Lazerred6 10-07-2008 10:49 AM

Don't get the ones with the amber corners

clear corners for the win

You definitely don't want any "euro" design headlights. Almost every non-OEM crystal clear headlight will eventually fog and look like crap.

I'd just get the Set from Blue Oval, like I said. Unless your dad's bud can get you a really good deal, no one is gonna beat BOI. Like I said, just make sure whatever you decide, get some clear all-weather silicone and give them a good bead around the edges to prevent condensation.

Lazerred6 10-07-2008 10:55 AM

I have the ones from AM and have had them for over a year now and they still look new

You're lucky.. lol

I went through probably, 4 sets of headlights on my '98 including a set from AM and they all fogged until I finally went with an OEM style. Granted, they may use a different manufacturer now or something may have changed, who knows.

Silverstar bulbs are the brightest most economical halogen bulb on the market. There are other brands out there that claim to be brighter, but cost a lot more than the Silverstars do. You can pick up a set of Silverstars online for $20.00 if you look in the right places. The other bulbs that claim to be brighter have reliability issues as well and from everything that I have read, burn hotter and typically don't last a year.

The Side marker bulbs should cost you no more than about $10.00 (pair) at any automotive store.

They will without a doubt be much brighter and more clear than OEM, especially condensated OEM, but don't expect HID brightness without buying HID's.

XeroTrinity 10-08-2008 08:25 PM

I just got some new OEM smoked, cobra headlights with clear corners and smoked fog lights for 185 off Ebay.
Fog lights alone are worth 100 and headlights are worth 200. Ya, you could call me a happy camper.

Id go with OEM, not projector..

mustangman95gt 10-08-2008 08:28 PM

ya thats what im going to do, but dont know if i trust ebay as the seller. there is a lot of crap on ebay. who is the seller you got yours from?

XeroTrinity 10-08-2008 09:33 PM

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant...d=p3911.c0.m14

Thats where I got mine from
Theres a few 99-04 headlights on there for anyone looking, but as for 94-98, there isnt much man, sorry. Theres a few headlight corners there though

WNRacing 10-08-2008 09:50 PM

I speak from experience.. Have bought two different sets of headlights on eBay. One was a standard "cobra" knock off and one was a single piece "projector" they both sucked and both ended up looking like crap after a few months.

The 99-04 aftermarket is a little better than that of the 94-98's, but you still would have to seal the crap out of any housing, especially bought from eBay to keep them clean for more than a few months.

BOI is a trusted aftermarket retailer that has good quality for a liveable price. Just like I've said over and over, you still have to seal them, no matter what. Even if you bought them directly from Ford. Learn from my experience and don't buy something too cheap, because all too often you get what you pay for.

Go here and watch the video. http://www.autohow.tv/node/31

mustangman95gt 10-09-2008 09:59 AM

ya so i think im ordering the pair later today.

the BOI clear cobra headlights and corners

Cobra Corners: http://www.blueovalindustries.com/products.php?pid=726

im about to run up to murrays tp get the silverstars but is there a specific size i need for the side marker lights? because im going with silverstar there too. if so let me know and also im going to pick up a few tubes of sealant silicone

i will post some before and after pictures in daytime and night after install

mustangman95gt 10-09-2008 07:35 PM

alright here is a new question. where do i get the silverstar ultra side marker bulbs and/or fog lights? i didnt see the ultra's anywhere i went today for side marker or fog lights

The housings from BOI should be direct replacement. I wouldn't buy the Ultra's, just get the standard Silverstar's. I've compared them side by side and there isn't enough of a differance to pay the extra cash.

The parts you need are:
  • Headlight bulbs: 9007ST-2
  • Corner Turn signal: 3157AST
  • Fog Lamp Bulb: 893ST
Hope this helps! :)

mustangman95gt 10-10-2008 09:45 PM

thanks it helped. i picked up the ultra just because the deal they had going on made them $10 cheaper than the regular silverstars so I thought why not, and so my lights don't look retarded im going to get the silerstar fog and side marker lights, also considering one of my foglights has been MIA since i hit a pot hole the car mustang didnt like. must have broken the bulb

mustangman95gt 10-15-2008 01:59 PM

greatttttttt the headlights came today, only problem is one of the brackets used to hold the bulb in place fell out during shipping and cracked in half. all i am getting is a busy signal so this is great. i wanted to install by this weekend i hope this works out

venom 10-15-2008 04:34 PM

Ive had many lights, clear, black, etc. Its hit or miss if they will leak or not and its not tied to price either. I would seal any light you buy. My biggest issue I have is that the corners have a weather strip that does not last as it will crack due to sun exposure. I would keep the factory corners so when it does crack you can swap it out with aftermarket weather strip. The new edge stang dont have this issue as your one piece housing does not require weather stripping. The worst thing you could due to lights is grab them from the front and pull as your likly undoing the glue. You need to grab them from the rear to pull but pushing from the front clear plexi is ok.

silverstar by far. i just put new headlights on my car and put silverstar ultra in there, they are unreal. amazing light. you don't need to pay the extra for the ultras but they have a $10 rebate on them right now so it's cheaper. definately go with the silverstars

i will post pics hopefully later
