I have been reading the forum for some time now, but just registered today. I am sure that all members will be happy to hear that my wife and I now own three Mustangs, the last one purchased with the proceeds from the sale of my 1998 Corvette. The Vette was just too hard to work on and too "exotic" for a country boy like me. We have a 1965 coupe with a .030 over 289 and C-4 that I finished restoring about 6 months ago (well, you are never really finished), and a 2008 V6 coupe that we bought a couple of months ago. The newest addition to the herd is a 2005 GT convertible (for the wife). Both S197's are 5 speeds. (Ain't I lucky to have a wife that loves to drive a manual tranny car)
The Mustang mania really got started last year. Every time we went to a car show or cruise in with the Corvette (actually my second vette, the first was a 93 coupe) my wife spent most of her time looking at old Mustangs. And, we both fell in love with the new S197's when they first came out. So, I bought the 65 coupe as a 10th anniversary present to my wife, then spent the next 6 months finishing up the restoration that was started by someone else about 8 years ago. I really enjoyed working on a car I could understand. As they say, it was downhill from there, with the purchase of the next two Mustangs. I have been doing some tweaks to the 08 coupe, adding a Pony grille (love those retro fog lights!) and 17 inch Bullitt wheels, plus swapping the crappy Euro style shifter **** for a Roush ****. I just ordered the Ford Racing V6 dual exhaust from CJ Pony parts this week. I think these mods will hold me for a while. Next on the list is to swap the stock mufflers on the GT to something with a little more rumble.
Sorry for the long story, but I know the forum members are passionate about Mustangs, and felt they would enjoy my little story. I do have one question. I know the trannies are different in the V6 and the GT, but the GT is smooth as silk. The V6 is really stiff and requires a lot more effort to shift, etc. I even had the dealer check the car as I felt there may be something wrong, but the service guy said it was normal. Has anyone else noticed the same thing with their V6 5 speed? Would a Hurst or other aftermarket shifter make a difference? Thanks.

Welcome to the board. I don't have any experience with the trans in the 05+ v6, but when I got a MGW for my 3650 it made shifting much smoother and precise. I think buying a performance shifter would be a good idea as it changes the whole driving experience. It really makes shifting enjoyable and less work.

Thanks for the welcome and the responses. The car is new and only has about 2,000 miles on it, so maybe it will loosen up a little after a few more miles. That may be a good reason to get out and run it through the gears as much as possible...to help break it in.

Well, I test drove one of my friends stock 05 GT, and the shifter compared to my stock 05 V6 shifter is much smoother and easier to shift between gears. As mentioned in my previous post, my shifter is a little difficult sometimes to put in first/reverse. a MGW short shifter is definitely on my shopping list with the next paycheck.

MGW shifter
I have seen the Hurst, Roush, Ford Racing and Steeda shifters advertised, but I am not familiar with MGW. Does anyone know who sells it? Does anyone have any comparison info for the MGW shifter to the other aftermarket shifters for the 2005-2009 V6 cars? Thanks.
