!!!!error code P1285 PLS HELP!!!!!!

I was going home and I stop at Mcd I notice the car was shaking a lot more then I saw "service engine soon" I was WTF so then I saw my water temp was very high almost to the red part. I was WTF is going on so I stop for 30min and waited till the temp was a least normal then I went home driving slow. I have a predator connected then went at the Diagnostics option show error code and this come up "P1285 and something else I need to connect it again to see what it says. What is error code P1285??

Redrum 09-02-2008 05:17 PM

it says "P1285 Cylinder head over temperature condition" what does this mean pls help

Flynnster 09-02-2008 05:24 PM

your cylinder head is over the set tempurature...... =]]]
buut the second code is most likely just due to the overheated coolant.

Redrum 09-02-2008 05:53 PM

But what's the problem causing this?

03MustanGT 09-02-2008 06:28 PM

Check your coolant make sure its full. Check to see if your heater is working. Can you monitor the temp signal with the Diablosport? If you can see what the sensor is reading. The only two things that cause that code are a overheat or a bad sensor.

Flynnster 09-02-2008 06:45 PM

Possibly a stuck closed thermostat, bad waterpump, and even a plastic bag or somethign coverign the radiator. (heard of it happening not sure if it is really possible.)

i'm going to check with the diablosport tomorrow and when i turn off my a/c i notice the temp went down a bit so ya i think its a thermostat but i will check this after i come from work.

Turning your A/C off is just taking a load off the engine. Something in your cooling system is working properly. Thermostat would be fairly low on the list of things i would check. How many miles are on your car?

right now i'm at 95,xxx.

First things to check does the cooling fan turn on once the motor is up to temp (half way on your stock gauge). Does the radiator have coolant at all? Does the upper radiator hose get hot and firm once the motor is at operating temp?

Those are the first three I would check and we can help you from there. I can tell you this Do NOT drive it with it overheating like that as you will warp your heads and start popping head gaskets left and right.

Ok cooling fan does come on when it should. The radiator has 50% water and 50% coolant have not flashed the radiator at all since I got the car on 05. The upper radiator hose is not firm it’s soft when I was touching it last night.

spike_africa 09-03-2008 08:20 AM

Was that with the motor up to temp? the reason being that if the thermostat fails the upper hose will not get firm and will not get hot as no coolant will be passing threw it like it should once the motor is warmed up.

Also I forgot to say you need to make sure the cooling fan turns on with the a/c off not on.

Ya the motor was up temp the fan was on but the upper hose was still soft. I turn off the a/c and I’m not driving the car too. My dad is actually checking my car since I’m at work his going to change the Thermostat.

Flynnster 09-03-2008 01:59 PM

if it was still soft you need a new thermostat. It is not letting any of the coolant get to the radiator wich makes it hot. not too hard of a fix =]

Winner!

The thermostat has failed like he said. Just go get a replacement its a $12 fix.

Redrum 09-03-2008 05:06 PM

OK i replace the thermostat it does not overheat but the car feels like i lost performance. When i turn the steering wheel feels hard i check the fluid and its fine i don't know if its one of the tire that need more air. o and the thermostat i got it say's 180.

spike_africa 09-04-2008 06:46 AM

That is a lower temp then stock. Stock is 195* if you were a power adder car I would say that's fine, but that temp should still be ok for you regardless. You are more then likely just thinking something is different. But keep us updated if something changes.

Well I put some air one of the front tire it was low it feels much better. Soon I will put on my procharger in a few months. Thx for the help

What?!?!?! Procharger you say, that makes me happy. Your gonna love that extra power and the fact that you going that way the 180* stat will be better for you to keep the motor a bit cooler with the extra heat of more power!

bad news guys my car overheated again today. but i notice i had the a/c on and when i turn it off in a few min the temp was to normal. What do u guys think?

Flynnster 09-04-2008 07:00 PM

jsut put the procharger on it and it will fix itself..........

03MustanGT 09-04-2008 07:06 PM

Something is not working as well as it should be. I have never noticed are there aux. fans for when the A/C is on with the Mustangs? That would be where I would start. Also check for a bad H20 pump and a clogged radiator.

Redrum 09-04-2008 07:25 PM

there are telling me that i need to speed up the fans cause it's a 180 not 195 stock thermostat is this true? i have a predator runing a custom tune for 87 oct proformance.

03MustanGT 09-04-2008 07:37 PM

If that does work I would think its a band aid and not a fix.

Flynnster 09-04-2008 07:38 PM

no all the 180 vs. the 195 does is let teh coolant flow when it gets to 180 instead of 195. Making the fans faster might help but its not becasue of your new thermostat.

Redrum 09-04-2008 07:44 PM

u guys don't think if its the water pump?

03MustanGT 09-04-2008 07:47 PM

Could be is there any leaks from it?

Redrum 09-05-2008 06:38 AM

well its not leaking from anywhere i know off. i notice if i don't have the a/c on it does not overheat. The temp stay normal i have change the thermostat i have check the upper hose and lower hose for leaks but there fine. So what it could be?

spike_africa 09-05-2008 06:54 AM

Thermostat could of been put in wrong. I would double check everything again. Make sure fan turns on with motor up to temp a/c off. Then try flipping the a/c on see if the fan stays on It should kick up to high speed when the a/c is on. Make sure the upper hose is getting firm and hot like before and double check fluid levels. The fact that its only with the a/c is making me think some more on this. I'll get back to you.
