Chip/Tune Questions for V6

Hey guys-

Ok so I've been researching the tuner thing....your opinions, and to educate me a bit more:

I also see the "chips" that come with 1 tune on them...my question is....having a V6 Auto tranny...
  • What kind of HP gain could I expect on my stock car with the chip?
  • Are chips considered bad, or a poor alternative to buying a tuner?
  • If I bought one of the tuners I see on AM.com ($350 range)...what kind of HP gain could I expect with that?
  • If I'm understanding the purposes of chips/tuners correctly..being that they allow you to adjust gears/shifts, remove factory limiter, etc (hopefully I have that right)...what other things can a tuner/chip do for me?
Sorry for all the questions, I've done the research, but didnt' see a resource that really outlined all this for me.....

Thanks!!

IMO buy a tuner man much better than a chip. cuz with a tuner u can check ur engine light whenever its on, n there are alot more other options to choose from. As hp yes i did feel gains threwout all the gears. Fuckin shifts faster and harder. As for adjusting the gear shifts yes u can do that. aslo it automatcilly removes the speed govenor when u install the tuner. Overall i like the my Xcal 3 tuner. Im learning more as i go. well also sum help from peps on this forum. Also i was told that i could lower my temp to about 180, but i would have to buy a 180 thermestat. no biggy there cuz im gonna buy it 2morrow. Also u can go to sctflash.com and go to the tech support and click on the live chat. there they will also be happy to answer all ur ?'s

the gains will be the same wheather a tuner or a chip. the advantage with a tuner is you can pull codes and adjust things with ease. lower the timing if you think you got bad gas or something along those lines.

An xcal2-3 is a solid investment.

get the SCT XCal 3 :D

Dave04Mustang 05-08-2008 03:02 PM

you will gain around 7-10 (give or take a few) from a tune. I would recommend getting a SCT tuner from Justin @ www.vmptuning.com . Thats who I have my tunes from which you get 3 custom tunes.

cool, I guess I'll be going with the tuner then :)

hey but would he need 3 custom tunes? cuz i dont even use my first custom tune that AM gave me, i just use the pre programmed tune they gave me, lol

SRQ 05-08-2008 03:36 PM

Yeah I don't think I'd need 3, but.....still...tuner would be better option?

engineman312 05-08-2008 07:41 PM

tuner is you best option, for all the reasons stated, like puling codes and stuff. you can have multiple tunes on a chip, and have a switch installed that can allow you to change it, but if you can use a hand held tuner, why have the chip??

you can get multiple tunes, depending on how you drive. if i were you, i'd get an economy tune that runs on regular gas, and might as well get a 93 tune for when you want to run premium.

agreed. i'd go w/the tuner if i were u. i went w/the chip for a while. it was great, but then i just bought the tuner recently.

butttt if you decide to go w/the chip, i have a chip for the 99-04's w/the coin bevel switch that i'm kinda lookin' to get rid of.

3.8LMustang 05-09-2008 07:26 AM

i perfer a tuner instead of a chip, a tuner u can do alot a shit with, while the chip ??? will its just a chip, lol

SRQ 05-09-2008 07:28 AM

ahhhhh really, that's what I was lookin' at....how much are you lookin' for? And what tunes are on the chip?

I have an Xcal II, and I am not so sure I like it. The shifting is the biggest thing you will notice. Other than that, if you haven't done much else to your engine, you won't notice power gains. The tuner does allow a small amount of room to adjust things on your own, but if you really want to change something, you are going to need a new tune installed. It is nice for codes, although I am pretty sure any auto parts store will read those for you anyway. My advice: gears if you haven't already, J-mod & tranny cooler (the correct way to improve tranny performance), and suspension modifications. Of course, I suppose the tuner would also allow you to adjust your speedo with the gears. But if you are wanting it solely for the purpose of improving your drive, I wouldn't.

The 3 tunes come in handy IMO. You can do it for all sets for example if you don't have any power adders you can make different octane tunes. Mine are all around I have a: 93 Performance, 87 Performance, 87 Gas Mileage. As well if you need a new tune your tuner can send you a new one over the internet and you can upload it to the SCT

Tuners = versatility

I use a chip with multiple custom tunes (dyno tune).

It really depends on the person and the application.
