New Gears for my sixer.

I'm ordering a Ford racing Posi-traction differential for my sixer but I'm still iffy on which gears to go with, 3.73 or 4.10?

WaterDR 11-20-2004 06:42 PM

I don't have any experience with 6's and gears, but I would guess more is better. If you drag, you may want to know how the gear options affect trap rpms etc.... but other than that, I would say 4.10's.

TayWolf55 11-24-2004 04:34 PM

4.10s for auto, 3.73s for manual.

If you would like some more info, we have a huge guidea bout it at www.3.8mustang.com/forum/

Mustangdewd3.8 11-26-2004 07:32 AM

yeah for the 5 speed you'll def. want 3.73, unless you do NO highway driving. because those gears are just gonna knock off your top speed. for example at like 70 mph you'll be at like 4500 rpms with 4.10 and for 3.73 maybe at like 3500 rpms stressing on a an engine. you need a powerful engine before the gears but the 3.8 can def handle it :)

And Ford has a traction Lok the posi traction is GM

www.gefracing.com has great prices on gears, the T lok you'll need a chip and a speedo recal also to get the odometer working also :\

IceMan 11-27-2004 04:55 AM

I've got a tuner for athe recal Thanks for the input everybody.

spike_africa 11-27-2004 07:11 PM

you have a v6 so i wouldnt even think about getting a anything less than 4.10's

2000blackone 11-27-2004 07:49 PM

Everyone usually says 3.73s for 5spd and 4.10s for auto, but I'm a fan of gears, so I wouldn't mind 4.10s on a 5spd one bit. It should be a lot of fun :D

No you're right, it's fine it's just some of the shifting would be unbearable for daily driver that wants some kick off the line, but all in all 3.8 cant really handle these gears, you put way too much stress on the engine. I mean it will handle it but it tears it apart.

Elaborate on that for me man... I was settled on 3.73's... now i'm questioning myself...

He's basically saying the 3.73 won't create enough kick off the line for a v6. Which is not true. the 3.73 is a great all round gear for the stang v6, and I know many that have done it and will vouch for it's ratio. Yeah the 4.10 will do more but I dunno if he understands what 4.10s will do to the car.

Just answer this, will you do highway driving and how much do you drive it?
-Answer that and I can help you decide what you might be looking for.

Also you do know with gears you should get the Ford T lock the speedo recal and a chip rebuild kit and friction modifer?

95bstallion 11-28-2004 08:45 AM

3.73's

I have 3.73's on my auto 95 sixer and they seem to give it some nice acceleration, but i dont go trying out my top speed often so i dont know really how it effected that.

Mustangdewd3.8 11-28-2004 01:37 PM

They will take off your top end... Like 120 to.... 105-110

not too bad but the thing is at those speeds you'll be eating at the RPMs at like 4800 ... hard on the engine.

So if you dont do highway driving... it's cool to get higher gear ratio for engines that can't really handle it.

TayWolf55 11-29-2004 07:48 PM

They wont affect your top end to the point where you would notice it.

If you do the math, the 4.10 gears can take you way above 120 mph if you have the power to do so.

You can still hit the speed limiter at around 115 with 4.10s.

I hit 115 without a problem with my little 98 v6 with 4.10s.

Mustangdewd3.8 11-29-2004 09:44 PM

No I know it's not that bad like top speed on a v6 is 121 but it will drop you to about 110 Im not say thats not toicible what i is that you'll be maxing out the rpms trust me I've seen these mods done to these cars.

4.10 gears can take you above but the engine can't Im saying that the v6 can't handle the 4.10 as they are intended but they can handle it for off the line.

I have too. One memory comes to mind... mine. :p I rode at 115 hitting the speed limiter with a good 500 - 1000 rpm left. I know its not the best thing to do... especially in my little 98. It felt like it was about to fall apart. Last time I do that. :D

Mustangdewd3.8 12-02-2004 06:23 PM

was the 98 a v6?

lol it is a beast, with 4.10s?

Heres the video:

3.73's are good enough, why? because someday when you decide to bolt a power adder up, you will aready have the right gears. 4.10 are too steep for a 6, they will do little more than eat up mileage. Get the 3.73's and spray it, happy stock GT hunting.:)

Mustangdewd3.8 12-03-2004 07:00 PM

zactly gotta watch this vid ^^

That was an awesome video, did you have any other bolt on aside from the gears?

and btw where did you get those rocker panel stencils. ( my next thing I want to do ^^)

I had cold air intake, mac flowpath exhaust, and asp pulley

What are you talking about rocker panel stencils?

Rocker panel stencils come on the 6's, they are just graphics under the doors. I believe there are about four different ones, all look bad IMHO.

Mustangdewd3.8 12-04-2004 08:04 AM

I liek the retro of it all, you car was white with black decals over your rocker panals, I guess they came on your car.

Yeah they came stock on mine... my friend has them on his green v6 too. A lot of people told me to take them off but I liked them. :D

All my friends and their rice burners keep telling me take off all of my decals I want to punch them in the face Im proud of the car I drive.

Silvr04GT 12-24-2004 05:26 PM

I would definitely get get the 4.10s on a V6, unless you plan on adding a supercharger.

Fist of all, ricers have no say:) They lost that when they thought they could race cars my grandmother would drive. Second, you decals came stock, leave them, you are just preserving the stock look, which to me, is what you should do, I believe that anything more that the factory look plus a drop and rims, (18 is the most) is too much, call me a purest, but thats how I feel, so tell you little geek friends, to bang off. Oh, but I still think they look bad, except maybe for the one that just says mustang, with the bars

questions...

Ok, so I've read over this topic and the various replies to it. Now I have an '02 Mustang V6 auto :angry3: And at this time it's completely stock. I'm looking at doing several upgrades to it including the rear gears. Now someone posed a very good question as to which one is going to be better suited for the V6. "What kind of driving do you do?" Well to answer that I do a lot of city driving, back and forth to work and school. But, I also do a fair amount of freeway driving as all of my friends live about 40 miles from my house now. Then there is also the question of "What's better, more power off the line, or higher top end speed?" And that's where I have trouble deciding...so I'd love it if you guys could give me your opinions on that. I want to do the 3.73 gears but at the same time, I don't want to lose the top end speed. If anyone can help me out here, with this question and just a general idea of some good mods to do, you can email me or just post back here. My email address is BeatTheBrat94@hotmail.com
Thanks.

Thanks.

In terms of gas milage with 3.73s I wouldn't even worry about it, maybe if you were switching to 4.10 or something.
