Default 1996 v6

I might be getting my bros 96 v6 auto with 96,xxx miles on it and im going to want to mod it. Ive been wanting just a few simple mods like throttle bodies and underdrive pullies but ive been reading those arent good mods for 1. starting out and 2.not good until you have more power.
the engine is stock right now but i want to add more power.
what do you guys recommend.
my first mod i want is an exhaust system, i need advice on that too. im not sure about brands and type; muffler, catback, etc
i want dual exhaust and care more about sound than performance

Well pulleys are worth like 4-5rwhp on that car, a Tb does nothing on it. As for exhaust if you search or look at the top of the v6 tech section we have a sticky on exhaust combos and mods for the v6 cars.

Becareful with modding those motors they tend to pop the stock head gaskets really easy. If you want it to be faster you really should look into a supercharger/nitrous/turboing it.

go with dual exhaust and gears. Sound alot better and a bump in get up and go with the gears. 4.10's or keep em stock...

couldnt help with the exhaust advice, but just search for it in the forums and you'll find everything you need about the exhaust. The gears, you have to make sure you buy the ones for your rear end which is a 7.7(im pretty sure about that)...but 4.10, 3.73, 3.55 all those will fit in there...go with 4.10 though, that would see the best results

You would use gears for the ford 7.5" rear end not 7.7" Also it doesnt have a posi stock so thats a worth while thing to add so you get power to both wheels. But really you need to figure out what your gonna do with this car first.

yea i agree, im not sure what i want to do with this car. i might just want a few upgrades, not supercharging it. if i do buy a bunch of small power parts and then want to supercharge it later, i cant nessicearly use the parts i bought before so i need to know if supercharge or not. for 5k i would rather want a different car but then a 400hp mustang or like a 2004 mustang stock is a choice i need to make. but thanks for your advice

keep the car you have stock and save your money...best thing to do. Then upgrade to a newer model.

you can find used 4.6 PI engines complete average mileage for less than $1000 maybe even come with a tranny....Thats what I would look into instead of dumping $1000 into an exhaust, TB, and intake which almost do nothing......

Something tells me thats out of his skill rang, no offense ment. You can make 400rwhp easy with a trubo kit and some fuel upgrades on the stock 3.8 motor they are really strong for some reason.

If you tossed out 4k for a kit and fuel upgrades then did a tune you would have a beast. Of course then you need to upgrade the rear end and tranny would need mods, buts its gonna be like that with a v8 too. So honestly if you like the v6 and the car its not a bad car to add alot of power too plus not many people have hot rodded v6's.

I applaud those that do hotrod there v6's.

i dont really want to have to get a new mustang just to put power into it. im fine with the v6 car. with 4-5k i would rather have a "hot-rodded" v6 than a stock newer mustang. where do you suggest i get the parts and the work done. i dont know of many places here in sf but if you guys know of any places that you know or have been too that would be awesome. with a v6 would turbo be better than supercharge?

With the v6 its a toss up to me. If you wanted to make like low 300rwhp rang a ATI procharger would do the job and work great and is cheaper. But a turbo setup will make more power for sure, but costs allot more so its up to you.

I don't know of any shops in SF sorry. I can say this i don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but installing a Supercharger isn't very hard if you have some mechanical knowledge you can install one and the kits come with good directions also.

Yeah not very many people do the "beefing up the V6". The turbo would be a better setup for you though, if the extra $$ isnt a big issue. It would definately suprise some other mustangs on the road, thats for sure. Let us know what you do and when you start the project.

yeah worry about getting the car first...there might be some maintainence you have to do before you can do the modding stuff you want.
