Corvette rear-ends

I read in a MMFF article that the LS1 corvettes come stock with a 7.5 rear. This seems small for the power they put out. Is this true, if so is it possible that the 7.5 is a V6 stang can handle some serious power? If not then what are the main differences.

i don't know about the vette, but i beleive the 7.5 on our V6's is good to a max of 250hp~.I have heard #'s up to 300 but i mean the GT came with 250hp(flywheel) stock and they upgraded the rear, so i would imagine you wouldn't want to stress it too much more then 250hp.

i thought they were good to 350?

i'm not 100% sure, but their has got to be a reason that ford didn't want to put the 7.5 in the GT's. i really wouldn't build a V6 and try and run 350hp thru the stock rear.

even if you put in new gears, a detroit true trac, and a girdle?

You're talking about a totally different rear end now LOL. Oh and trust me for some reason chevy stock performance parts shit on fords...

irrelevant comparison. the v6 is not for power so why stick extra money into the rear end and make it strong? that would be throwing money out the window for no reason. Besides... the corvette doesnt use a live axle setup, it has a Dana IRS setup which blows the cobra irs out of the water.

+1

completely different rear...

vette = IRS

vettes leave no room for anything... GM kept it lightwieght and used a smaller rear... and so it would fit...

you are comparing two completey different cars...

its like comparing your left shoe to your left testicle

+2 to that. the inch size is only a measurement of the ring gear diameter. It's not a measurement of strength.

The vette IRS is a neat thing. The car was built around it, instead of the IRS being built around the car like the IRS cobras. If you want to beat on a ford live axle, then build up a 8.8, or upgrade all the way to the nearly unbreakable Ford 9".
