Cool Widest Tire/Rim Combo

I am after a particular look for the 2005 GT Mustang which is a wide stance and dropped front look and would like help with the following:

What are the widest tires and rims I can fit under the rear of the 05 GT Mustang without binding or causing the tire to rub anywhere?

What size front and rear rims and tires should I go for to get that high rear low front staggered dropped front look without going to lowering kits? (Big speed bumps in this part of the world)

What are "the" tires to get for ride and handling and speed?
(I commute to Saudi Arabia and back to Bahrain each day at around 100mph)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Default Wheels within wheels

The usual route to achieve the look you're after would be to put lowering springs, larger wheels, lower profile tires, etc. If you want to have full control of ride height such as you describe, perhaps the best method would be with a coil-over setup (www.maximummotorsports.com). The problem with speed bumps is hard to get around - you either learn to cope with them, or you don't drop the front suspension very far. A coil-over set for the rear would allow you to raise just the rear to yield a raked look.

As for the tires and wheels to use, consider going to 18-20" wheels on the back and keeping the stock size 17" wheels on the front. By increasing the size of the wheels on the back, the car will appear to be higher in the rear than just the amount of lift you dial in with the coil-overs. In terms of maximum wheel size, this varies depending on your financial resources (the bigger they are, the more they cost) and the style you prefer (many of the classic Mustang wheels are not available larger than 18").

As for high speed cruising at 100mph, you will degrade your ride and handling characteristics with too much differentiation between the front and rear suspension settings... Be careful, and experiment with different coil-over dial-ins before cranking up the speed!

If it was mine (and I don't have any idea of your driving conditions, of course), I'd put a nice 3/4" drop spring set on the car, and go with 18" wheels and 285 width tires front and back (this allows you to rotate the wheels for even tire wear). With the mileage you're putting on the car, I'd select quality tires with a tread wear rating over 300 (Michelin, Pirelli or whatever).

Check out the www.tirerack.com site and try on several wheel/tire combos to see which ones strike your fancy. If you come back here with specific "what if" questions, people who have similar setups will give you their suggestions.

Congrats on the 05 GT. Bet is gets looks over there!

Cool

Hello Tripleback,

Firstly thanks for your in depth reply and just to put you in the picture, I dont have any vehicle yet, however I have just ordered the 2006 GT Premium Model in Black with red interior upgrade and 5 speed auto.

Since performing a search and posting my above request I have been all over the tires direct site and 1010 tires and a host of other wheel manufacturers websites.

Originally I was going to go with the staggered look by having 17" fronts and 18" rears as you have suggested and get the raked look that way but have not found a wheel set that I liked to do this.

There is also the problem of the speed bumps that would no doubt take the chin spoiler out if I tried to rake the vehicle and I have been mulling over the web for the past 24 hours and decided to go with 18" rims all around.

I will order: Stern ST 2 Face II Touring Sport Rims have 8.5" on the front with Toyo Proxes T1R - 255/35ZR18`S
And 9.5" Stern ST 2 Face II Touring Sport Rims in 9.5" x 18" on the rear with Toyo Proxes T1R 295/35ZR18`S.

It wont be raked like I want but I should have a good looking setup.

When the Mustang arrives I will also fit:
CDC Shaker System
CDC C Pillar Scoops
CDC Agressive Chin Spoiler

I will also get silver striping similar to venoms mustang and then enjoy the ride each day.

Once again thanks for your input

All the best Ozzie

Default A plan

Sounds like a plan. If you get everything set up the way you describe, it should be a sweet look.

Post pics when you get done.

This is what my car looks like. I run 18x10" polished cobra replicas on the back with 295/35 18 firehawk tires, and 18x9" w/275/35 18's on the front.
