Tire size for stock rims.
A buddy of mine was wondering what would be the best size for his stock bullitt wheels(17x8) He was wondering how big a tire can you fit on these.I told him probally 265/40/17's.What do you guys think?

Stock size is 245/45/17 and 245 is as wide as you should go unless running 555rs then you can get away with 275 because they typically run smaller than normal sizes. 245/45/17 or 245/40/17 is the optimal choice.

Damn, thought you might be able to go a little wider.Trying to talk him into some 17x10.5's though :)

let me ask you this.. is it possible to fit 17x8 tires on 17x10.5 rims? or would there be a problem with that (i have no idea what im talking about when it comes to tires so just tell me to shut up if im completely out there)

Believe it or not, I have a pair of BFG DR P275-40-17 mounted on my stock GT rims, and I have no problems, at all. They still spin a little, but I have no problem with that set up.

i know a good number of people with all kinds of brands running 275/40/17 on the back. Like everyone knows i have 275/40/17 nittos out back.

the tires that used to be on my 17x8's are not on the front of my car on 17x9" rims and they look rediculously small (narrow). i couldnt imagine even trying to put them on anything wider. |
I run Kumho Ecasta supra 712's in a 275/40/17 on my stock, polished 01' 17x8cobra wheels and have never had a problem. Been using these tires for a few years now.

275s are too wide and you'll lose sidewall strength and high speed road holding.
255/40/17 are the widest I'd use. If you go up to a 8.5" then 265, 9" 275. The optimum tire size is 245/45/17 on stock 17x8's for street radials. |
Lance, is your buddy trying to get the widest tire for racing or what? A BFG or Nitto 275 is alot wider than most 275's! If he's looking for tires with good handling and sideway strength...a 275 Nitto or Falken Azenis will work great. They both have a stiffer sidewall for Auto-X. My buddy has the Nitto nt555r extremes all the way around on his mustang and they hold up great! G-trac competition suspension and those tires....takes I-95 on ramps rated at 40-45 at 70 no problem, no slipping or swaying or tire squel at all.
IMO, a 275/40/17 is the best...not too big of a tire but not small at all. |
Geez this is a old thread!!
Thank's for the replies guy's :) |
I put 275s on 17x8 and it has great fitment.

I used to run a 275/40 on my stock rims (back only) and never had any problems. They bulge just a little bit, but nothing bad.
