why 255/40/17? what rims are you putting them on?

Sumitomos are cheap for a reason.

I looked at the available wheels...looks like they are 17x9. is that what you are getting?

255's are too skinny for a 9inch rim IMO. I would at least get 275/40/17 for the rear, the front too if it would fit ok.

hopefully one of the guys with an early sn95 like your will chime in. 275's will work for the rear though. just not sure on the front. I worked with a guy with a '95 GT, and he had 275/40/17s out back and 245's up front. the front looked like there was a lot more room for more tire though.

If moneys that tight maybe you should wait on the new rims and tires.

I was looking at my 275's out back today and i thought THEY were too skinny. haha.

I would put 285's on a 9" rim. You will hate yourself if you put 255's.

Also, Sumis are fine. I have a blower and 4.10's and they work great.

If money si that tight, then hold-off until you can do it right.

then go with 17x9's all around since you want to rotate them and use 275/40/17 tires. I wish I could say that those will work up front for sure, cause Im just pretty sure they would.

there's great advice that's been handed to you like the quote ^^^. You can ignore it or take it. So far the best advice to be had was given by zigg and waterdr.

255, 275, 285 are metric measurements of tread width in millimeters.
30/35/40/45/etc... is the aspect ratio (ratio of sidewall height to tread width). This sorta sets itself.
17/18/19/etc... is the diameter of the wheel.

The worst you will have is some rubbing on the front a full lock. You can get spacers that will help if not eliminate the rubbing. The trade-off is slightly limited turning, which is really not noticable since 99-04 GTs already have steering rack spacers. I had 275/40s on my stock 9" rims all around and was very happy with the size. One thing you might want to consider also is; My Sumitomo HTR Z III's seem to run a little narrow. I got 265 for the front and they don't look much more wider than my previous 245s. I don't know is all Sumi's run narrow though.
