Leather Care Tips

Trying to prolong the life of the red leather in the stang whats the best products out that prevent cracking and fading...

PColav6 04-05-2009 06:05 PM

Lexol cleaner and condition is some good stuff, you can get it at most auto stores.

mustangrn 04-05-2009 06:43 PM

Hey Pee what else do you recommend to clean the interior?

PColav6 04-05-2009 06:52 PM

A good, safe all purpose cleaner for every interior surface but glass is DP Total interior cleaner. It's water based and doesn't leave an oily residue on anything. Also smells like bananas. lol

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 07:16 PM

I use armor all cleaning wipes, then use armor original protectant or leather care.

PColav6 04-05-2009 07:36 PM

Don't use armorall protectant in your car.

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 07:38 PM

Y not?

j_gutta870 04-05-2009 07:42 PM

it helps crack leather.... armorall is one of the worst so called protectants

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 07:45 PM

:*( is it worse than not even protecting it??

j_gutta870 04-05-2009 07:46 PM

lol..... i'm sure its not.. but yea i had a cadillac deville before i got this mustang and i used armorall my leather started gettin lines in it and i didn't understand why and this guy told me that armorall wasn't a good product to use

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 07:48 PM

Ah so whats the best to use then?

j_gutta870 04-05-2009 07:52 PM

i'm actually tryin to find something that doesn't leave that oily residue after you wipe your seats...... that residue i believe i was told it like bakes the seats when it gets really hot in your car..... don't know how true that is but i stopped using it when i heard that

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 07:55 PM

oo what about that mothers stuff?

j_gutta870 04-05-2009 08:08 PM

pcola said use lexol cleaner and conditioner.... i would like to try mothers though

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 08:12 PM

I think my car has vinyl in it though, because it just honestly doesnt feel like leather, anyone know if 2000 v6s actually have REAL leather in em or vinyl?

j_gutta870 04-05-2009 08:30 PM

compared to the cadillac the mustangs leather feels funny.... its no where near as soft

Deathdiesel 04-05-2009 08:34 PM

It feels kinda plasticy which is why i think its vinyl, but of course my brothers 08 model is for sure real leather but maybe mine felt like that bran new i just cant remember.

spike_africa 04-06-2009 06:46 AM

Any good quality leather cleaner fallowed by a leather conditioner will do the trick. I am a Poorboys fan and I use their product on my seats and its fantastic and smells great. Does not leave them super shiny like the Meguires wipes do.

I agree! At the detail shop we absolutely DESPISE armorall. All it is is a shiney cover-up. It does NOT clean at all it just puts a shiney layer on top of the dirt that is there. It's unfortunate that people come in and are like "so you are just going to armorall everything and make it look really nice" THAT ANGERS us so much it's crazy. One secret we use that I can share is take a terry or microfiber towel. Get it wet with hot hot water and ring it out so it's not dripping everywhere. Then whip down whatever you please. Then wipe it all dry. Then if you have access to an air compressor we spray air into all the cracks the water might have dripped and get it all out, then re-dry.

Most likely it is real leather but talking and seeing mustangs for years, the quality has gone down a bunch. Not just stating because I have a 95, but I and others believe the 94-95 have the best quality leather and best/most comfortable stock seats of the mustangs. My uncle has an 03 v6 vert and he wants to steal my seats!

01FR500 04-10-2009 11:24 AM

I've been using some Meguiars leather cleaner/conditioner in a spray bottle, it seems to work well enough but I don't really know. I don't think my leather gets dirty enough for it to make much of a difference. For the dash I have use Meguiars foam stuff, it is really nice and doesn't leave a glossy finish, but it's not much of a cleaner.

Deathdiesel 04-10-2009 02:39 PM

Well im makin a trip down to autozone today soo im gunna look into some stuff. Also now armor has a actual "cleaning" wipe. And it actually works well on like door handles where it gets tinted over time from like you dirty hands, and the dash. But from what you guys said im not using armorall anymore for my seats.

King 04-10-2009 04:42 PM

Don't use armorall, period. It's greasy and crap.

Deathdiesel 04-10-2009 04:45 PM

Well i already got like 2 things of cleaning wipes, and one of protectant. I know the cleaning wipes dont leave greasy stuff it just gets out dirt. But yeah hopefully autozone has a good selection of cleaning supplies.

spike_africa 04-10-2009 05:59 PM

If you are gonna go there to get stuff stick to Meguires or Mothers and forget the other shit.

Deathdiesel 04-10-2009 06:04 PM

Yea thats what i figured, right now im lookin at allota diff cleaning stuff though so i hope they have kits.

r3dn3ck 04-11-2009 09:02 AM

what's wrong with annual treatment with neatsfoot oil? It'll darken the leather but it's really good for it.
