Default Hollowing Out Stock Cat's?

I've been looking at replacing the stock mid-pipe, but b4 i spend $3-500 on a quality stainless mid-pipe, I'd like to try removing the cat material from the original mid pipe. I see no real easy way of doing this, other than cutting the cat's open & removing the material, then welding them back up. My question is, has anyone done this? And if so, were you pleased w/the sound? Any & all suggestion-comments appreciated.

A guy in my town has a black stang that he hollowed out the cats. It sounds good at idle but sounds more and more like *** as rpm increase. You are better off replacing the midpipe. Non-stainless versions are much cheaper than 3-500 dollars (off road).

That's also what I was thinking, At A higher r.p.m. the resonance may be too much. Another option I was thinking of, was when cut apart, I could weld in a perforated tube, hence turning it into a resonator of sorts w/out the glass packing, or w/I guess.
Thanx Frito..

Well that solves that. I'll be purchasing the Magnaflow OR X pipe I guess. Thanx for all the replies.
