Problem with RPMS going way down and car dying (05 GT)...
 

Ok I recently put the BBK CAI on my car without a tune. I took it out for a drive and I noticed that with my A/C on when I push in the clutch my car will die. If I turn off the A/C it won't happen, but the rpms still drop a whole lot and then go back up to normal. Anyone know what could cause this???

Sounds to me you need to get it retuned. I believe the newer model have to be retuned whenever you put on a CAI.

I'm hoping thats all it is, but I'm gettin the tune in a week or so. Not driving it until then. I have a friend who has a Mystic Chrome Cobra and he says it just needs tuning but I wasn't sure.

I think the dealership can retune it if im not mistaken. what yr is your car?

Not necessarily. I have the same intake on my '05 GT. I ran that it for about 6 months with no tune and my car was just fine. Certain brands of CAI don't require a tune, but some cars can be more picky than others.

Also, the problem can't be in the 'tune' because he currently has only the stock tune.


Okay, in regards to the problem at hand. Are you sure you have everything hooked up properly? Nothing is loose, everything is snug and it its proper place? The only things you really need to check on the intake is the vacuum tube's attachment to the brass nozzle on the intake, make sure the sensor is screwed in all the way, make sure the steel rings that hold the filter to the intake tube are tight and that the filter is pushed on all the way, and most importantly, make sure the blue piece that holds the intake to the throttle body is on all the way and that there are no gaps and no movement.

That's really all I can think of because I'm not a car guru. :o


Oh, and j_gutta, why don't you just put the stock airbox back on in the meantime, that way you can still drive your car? That BBK intake is incredibly easy to remove. You don't have to take the entire intake apart piece by piece. Just remove the bolt that holds the heat shield to the radiator, the one underneath the filter that holds the heat shield to the fenderwell, the sensor, the vacuum tube, and undo the ties that hold it to the throttle body. Then just take it off and put your stock one back on. That way when you do get your tune, you can just put the entire intake back on there in one piece.

But, the MAF will freak out without a tune. That's why the idle drops and almost dies.

Mine did the same thing til we got it to a dyno after the TB and the C.A.I.

Ford doesn't like anything aftermarket other than them. So they try to make it a PITA as much as they can.

Thanks...... I'm going to have it all checked out to make sure everything is correct, but I was extra careful on making sure I plugged everything up right so I'm pretty sure everything is back on correct... I'm ordering a tune pretty soon

Yea, it's a must on our cars.

My SVT Focus did the same thing when I put the CAI on it. The RPMs would drop and resurge over and over at red lights once it got good and warmed-up.

I think ol' Spook must not be too picky. My car didn't freak out, throw codes, or anything when I didn't have a tune. :)

Got tired of it going up and down so I took it to the dealership... Turns out my throttle body is screwed... They say they can't see any reason why it would have screwed up the way it did because everything was hooked up correctly.. Thank God for warranties.... Get my car back Tuesday....
