hey guys, i've been reading these forums for a while but never got around to registering until today, anyway i have a question about my car. it's extremely fast for what it is and im not sure why. the car is an 01 gt and when i bought it a couple months ago it had nothing done to it except a flowmaster catback and cai. i've raced my friends 35th ann. camaro ss with an ls1 and beat him by 3 car lengths. last time at the track he ran a 13.2 in the quarter. i've also beaten an 04 gto, srt4 (stock) and another slightly modded srt4, also on the day i test drove it before i bought the car i kept up with a vette (im guessing somewhere around early 2000 but i dont really know vettes). is this normal for an 01 gt? i know they're fast cars but i hear stories of ls1's and the rest killing gt's all the time. all of the mods in my sig have been added in the past couple weeks and i havent raced anything yet. also, everytime i try to take it to the track it seems to be raining. but even the guys at any shops i take it to are impressed with it and say it has a lot more power than a normal gt.
so my real question is what could have been added that is making so much power without me knowing what it is. there is no supercharger or any other power adder, i dont know if it already has the gears done, not sure about a cam but i know i dont hear it, stock tb and plenum. i know this is a stupid question to ask but i know cars pretty good and i cant figure out why this car is so fast. edit: when i first put on the off road x pipe i didnt have a chip but the car didnt give me a check engine light so maybe it has something to do with the tune? |

i dont know what my car is running, havent been able to take it to the track yet, it's been raining here in florida for the past month. also, when my friend ran a 13.2 at the track i was there sitting in the stands.
i know gto's are slow and not worth the gas but i've been hearing stories of srt4's beating up on people all the time. what are they supposed to run stock anyway? low to mid 13's or something right? and yeah it's a vert with no weight reduction at all. still have the back seat, the spare tire, and everything else it came with. there's a local shop around here that all the kids hang out at on thursday nights, you can dyno your car for $35 and whoever posts the highest score gets $100 store credit or somethin like that. im gonna go over there and just see what kinda power my car is putting out with the mods i have now. |

got the 90mm mafs for free so i figured why not put it on. makes a huge difference on the way the car sounded (much deeper and much louder) and a little difference in performance so i left it on. and i dont really think it has gears because the rpms are still low at 75 on the highway (cant remember exactly what they were), if it does have gears they may be like 3.55's but im not really sure. switching it out to 4.10's in a week or so anyway so i'll find out. |

I think you just raced people who didnt' know how to drive! You should have lost to all the cars you stated except the srt4! No flame intended! But then a again, anything could happen in a street race!
PS: You don't need a 90mm maf... Miguel

i know i dont need the mafs, i've been told that many times but like i said it sounds a hell of a lot better and i felt a difference sotp when i put it on so i'd rather keep it. and i have the chip tuned for the mafs. if it were hurting my performance then thats completely different and it would be off but its not and it was free so why not keep it?

A lot of people who buy these cars are like me - less focused on bling, more focused on go. Maybe the original owner started with the motor instead of the chrome... Sounds like you might have a cnc ported pair of heads and some cams (does it idle real smooth, or is it a bit lumpy?). Adding the x-pipe would not necessarily throw a code - so long as you hooked up all 4 MIL's. If you didn't do this, and got no code, that is VERY odd for a stock setup...
I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that you have 3.73 gears in the car (stock was 3.27 or maybe even 3.07, can't remember). Of course, you may have been racing some slow drivers or badly tuned examples - otherwise, I think your vert. (I have an 02 gt vert), which weighs nearly 300# more than a coupe, would have been toast. Just my opinion. Be interesting what the dyno says and what gears are found in that rear - I'd have that checked before buying those 4.10's, by the by... tripleblack Quote:

the reason i mentioned my car threw out no codes is because i have no mil's and i didnt have a chip. i just put on the x pipe and figured i'd get a chip within a week to turn off those sensors or whatever and i was surprised the car didnt give any codes. so im figuring whoever had the car before me had a handheld tuner of some sort and bypassed those sensors already.
also yesterday on the highway i was doing 70mph and my rpms were right at 2k so im not sure if the car has gears or not. that seams kinda low. |

A 13.2 at a prepped track is a world of difference from someone screwing around on the street. Because his car ran a 13.2, I wouldn't count on yours going faster. There are more variables in determining how fast your car is than simply comparing it to another on the street. Hell... maybe I could take a Corvette on the street, but maybe he spun like mad, maybe he missed a shift, maybe he scratched his left nut and it distracted him... you get the point. Take it to the track and see how it goes, then report back.

I have the same setup as you - and the 2 rear sensors threw an OBD code when I first set it up. I was able to clear the code with my Diablo, and it didn't recur (yet - I'm told these codes can rear their heads again after a while). I don't know about you, but I like the sound from the X-pipe, and you definitely get a little bit of power. Never having had an off-road h-pipe to compare it to, I don't know if that would have done as well (some friends in the MCA have told me that my NA setup would have done just as well with a good H-pipe from MAC as it did with the Bassani...) tripleblack |

The front O2s remain in place. They provide the feedback to the computer to know how to trim fuel addition based on how close the A/F ratio is to the stoichiometric ratio (14.6:1) during part throttle conditions. BTW... this thread is all over the place. :tongue3:
