help me decide which gears

sup guys.. its finally time i got my gears now that i have the sct xcal2 to adjust the speedo. Many months ago when I was trying to plan stuff out I decided on 3.73s because this car is my daily driver. After reading and talking to people about how awesome 4.10s are I changed my mind again. Here's my weekly driving routine of my car.. everyday that i go to work (about a 20 minute drive) the speed limit is 45, sometimes i got 50-55 and put it in 5th, i do the same thing home. when i go back to school in the fall ill have to take the interstate for about 5 minutes and get off and i only go to class 2 nights a week. i usually go to the track almost every friday (might take a week off here and there) and i drive a little over an hour on the interstate to get there. if i need to go to my tuners for some reason i have to drive 3 hours on a highway (ive only been there once so far and that was recently). ok now, here is my track conditions.. im racing on a 1/8th track so gears are crucial to my time. the closest 1/4 mile track is 2 1/2 hours away, i will make the trip there but its only gonna happen a few times during the racing season so i will end up at 1/8th tracks a lot more. me and my dad think 3.73s is the way to go for me because its gonna give me that extra umph and also keep my car affordable when i have to drive around town or make trips (im already using 93 octane gas). let me hear your opinion please :) im going to be buying these gears in the next couple days!

also.. my car has almost 34,000 miles and we will be installing them ourselves with a guy whos done this all his life, he has the press we need and everything. should i get the bearing kit still? im getting the FRPP gears so i shouldn't need the installation kit cuz thats just the shims, right?

thanks in advance and sorry so long!! :)

wish I could help u.....But I myself cant make up my damn mind on what gears to get either..lol

I wish I could drive a stock gt with 3.73's and then drive a stock GT with 4.10's and feel the difference myself.... :hmh:

csledd 06-18-2005 06:28 PM

lol

when i went to get my car tuned they recommended i get 3.73 instead of 4.10.. but i thought to myself later that they do both drive s/c cobras so of course they'd say that lol

lol...indeed

NoKturnaL 06-18-2005 06:46 PM

I think u should get 3.73's.....it is an extra bit of punch.
I am leaning towards 3.73's..and I go to the strip alot..kinda....
i just think 4.10's will be to steep for me.....

NoKturnaL 06-18-2005 06:48 PM

actually ..i think imma get 4.10's....LMAO!!!!!!!!! see i cant make up my mind to..imma go in my room and cry now... :tongue6:

anywayz.....I think u should visit the HOW TO forum....I posted a gears calculator in there that can tell u some info on what RPM's your at in certain MPH's in certain gears......excellent tool and is accurate.

csledd 06-18-2005 07:03 PM

lol

yeah i've seen that calculator before and i knew a guy who had 4.10s and he said his gas mileage was fine! grrr i just dunno! im so confused. i want that extra punch the 4.10s give but i dont want it to be too much punch lol

the annoying punch will be 1st gear ..where u shift like 1 second at WOT, and tires spin.
I hear that 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears are neck jolting at WOT.....which is gooooooood...reaaaalllll gooooood......

how bout u get the 4.10's...and if u dont like em and wanna switch to 3.73..then I will pay for all costs on the transition

csledd 06-18-2005 07:30 PM

neck breaking is what i want.. i love that. i rode in a viper recently and got a headache cuz my head kept slamming against the seat :) lol

thats not a bad proposal, very tempting.. ill talk it over with my dad but most likely i'll do that. when did you plan to get gears?

venom 06-18-2005 07:33 PM

If you get the 4.10 ill promise to get 4.30s.

csledd 06-18-2005 07:45 PM

Right now I'm switched back to 4.10s lol

NoKturnaL 06-18-2005 07:47 PM

lol.....if only ford made 3.90 gears....

csledd 06-18-2005 07:53 PM

oh yeah another question i have.. i want to add a bit more increased strength to the rearend.. my dad said i should probably start at the u joints but he's a old camaro guy and doesn't know mustangs too well. what do you guys think?

Lunati 06-18-2005 08:02 PM

i too had a difficult time deciding wich gears to put as well. i took in to consideration many things: like the many miles i make to go to work in the hyway. i dont go to the track cuz the closes one that i can think its a few hrs away. but after much debating i decided to go with FRPP 4.10's. i just want to have that umph from the line while i'm waitng at the light. lol...i have less than 6k on my car, so i didnt get the master bearing kit. u on the other hand are getting close to the border line. if u have the money to cough it up, get the master bearing kit for insurance.

if your going to get a s/c or turbo get 3.73's if your staying N/A or just going on the bottle go with 4.10's, easy as that. or if u do alot of highway driving I would get 3.73's.

i guess i should be looking into some 3.73's soon :icon_bigs

madmatt 06-19-2005 08:55 AM

Ask yourself one question, are you EVER getting a supercharger. If there is any doubt in your mind, get the 4.10s. That is coming from a guy with the 3.73s who wishes that he had 4.10s even thought in the very DISTANT future, I might have a blower. Just get them and be done with it instead of getting the 3.73s and "maybe" getting a supercharger later. Alright, good luck makin the decision, cause it sucks.
Matt

MattJ 06-19-2005 09:35 AM

3.73s or 4.10s ... hmmm cant decide!

Ive got an idea.

GET 3.90s AND AN INSTALL KIT AND YOULL BE IN THE MIDDLE!

Badfish 06-19-2005 11:38 AM

You're gonna regret getting anything less than 4.10s

MattJ 06-19-2005 01:06 PM

You wont notice the 200rpm difference at highway speeds so what is there to regret?

Badfish 06-19-2005 01:07 PM

not coming harder off the line :D...screw highway speeds

csledd 06-19-2005 05:20 PM

lol im going with 4.10s :)

YAY!!! Now im sad...lol oh well, the 3.73s still pull like mad...but what would 4.10s do. Aw man, I knew I shouldnt have feared the gear...

csledd 06-20-2005 08:46 AM

ok.. so I'm buying the FRPP 4.10 gears.. they come with shims. What comes in the installation kit then? lol

and my dad said I shouldn't need to replace bearings because it takes a long time for them to go out normally, I dunno

csledd 06-20-2005 08:59 AM

nevermind really, motive's descriptions are much better for those kits, I shouldn't need them as it says only needed for 60k miles and up

but instead of doing rear end upgrades im goign to go with these along with the gears..

Steeda Firewall Cable Adjuster
Steeda Double Hook Quadrant
Steeda Adjustable Clutch Cable

Dont waste your time. Those cables are CRAP and snap very easy. Stay with oem. Spend your money somewhere where you wont have to replace it...

csledd 06-20-2005 11:13 AM

so a new quadrant isn't a good idea either? I power shift when I race so I thought it could help? hmm
