It sounds like the soleniod is sticking or the drive is hanging up in the ring gear. How many miles do you have on the starter? When this happens does the engine start but you have to turn it off to get the starter to stop? Try this, the next time this happens try to accelerate a little and see if this lets the starter disengage. This means that the drive is stuck in the teeth of the ring gear. If it doesn't then the soleniod tips are burnt and welding.
This needs to be taken care of quickly so you don't tear the teeth off of the ring gear.
