Electrical Questions
Hey all!
I have a question for you all. I have had under-drive pulleys on my car for a few years and every winter I have battery issues due to the lack of being able to keep the rpms up to charge the car since traffic is stop and go. I am going to remove them, however believe my my alternator may be giving up the ghost after 189,000 miles. My question is this, when I step on the brakes for instance, I notice my voltage needle drops a bit when at the stop light. Nothing else is one, just this one action. Is this a sign of the alternator truly failing, a bad ground wire (I am not sure where they are all located on the car), or a voltage regulator going out. If it is a regulator, do the 96 GT's have the regulator built into the alternator? Not a real electrical guy, so need some guidance. Thanks everyone.

I had under drives on my old 96' GT and never had any trouble at all. I'm guessing its the battery or alternator. It will make the amps drop off at slower engine speeds, but shouldn't hurt any. Have the parts tested, that should tell you whats up.

Try this, clean the battery terminals, check the output of the alternator with a volt meter, look for 13 to 14 volts (closer to 14) at about 1500 rpms. Anything under 13 volts rebuild the alternator. Have the battery load tested. Hope this helps. Bubba

I had cleaned the terminals already. Traded the battery in. It was past it's life it appeared. However, still does the same thing a bit. So I am thinking that with a 1900000 on the ticker and the same alternator, even if it is close to being borderline, I will just get another alternator. I appreciate the help guy's.
