Question Iac

I was look at at the line that comes from my intake to the IAC, and I want to know what the black box is for that is on the line? And what would happen if I removed it and just put a straight through hose to the IAC?

Im not going to remove it. I thought it was a baffle or something. I heard people calling it the IAC Valve (Idle Air Control) because I did that gasket mod that helps your rpms drop off quicker. Thanks I will definately leave it on.
