valve cover removal

is it safe to take off the valve cover on a 2002 gt...i am doing this to paint them and hopefully tighten my headers while i'm at it...any problems i might run into ..thanks for any info

Its ok to take off your valve covers. Dont paint the inside of them though.

chatmanv6 04-17-2007 01:59 PM

ya i don't plan on paintin the inside...i was just wonderin bout oil spillin anywhere or gasket crap..thanks for the help

be careful and you can reuse the gaskets. they're rubber and can tear but if you're nice about it they're not a problem. enjoy.

is there anything i can do performance wise while i have them off thats not to hard of a job??

spike_africa 04-17-2007 05:55 PM

the only thing you can do by only taking the covers off is a cam swap, and its not easy. For the nay sayers you can do a cam swap with the front cover still on if you use the AFM tool. Only cars with screwed on cam gears can do that though. I forget the years you can do that.

Windsor engines are the only only ones w/ the press on gears so only 96-98 and 01+ can do that.

phil_the_thrill 04-17-2007 07:52 PM

so if you can do cams without taking the front cover off you should be able to do heads too without taking the front cover off correct. just a couple more bolts right???

spike_africa 04-17-2007 08:30 PM

no if you want to swap heads the front cover has to come off. I was just making a point that there is no easy mod you can do under the valve cover.

r3dn3ck 04-17-2007 08:43 PM

there is about dik you can do with the covers off short of a cam swap. You can pull all the lash adjusters and slap some .010 shims under em... probably get PTV contact but you asked for anything so there you go.

FYI... don't. You'll destroy your engine.
