Mustang Won't Stay Running!!

Ok guys..last week or so the Stang has been acting up. Every morning when I crank the car up, it shuts off. Same thing usually happens when I leave work in the afternoon or at night. I basically have to keep one foot on the gas and brake at the same time to give it gas to keep it running. After 5-10 min of driving it stops? I talked to a friend of mine and he said he had the same prob on his TransAm and it was the throttle sensor? Any ideas on this one?

Another note..when it finally does stay running, it idles so low I can hardly hear it running.

try checking to make sure your TB is closing all the way, and that it is in perfect working order.

also make sure you dont have any vacume leaks, check all vacume lines to make sure you dont have a big leak there somewere.

Badfish 06-15-2006 06:51 AM

yeah check all your vaccum lines, this has happened to me and it was as simple as putting a hose back on

Slither 06-15-2006 07:05 AM

but if it was a hose...I wouldn't think it would run fine after 10 min or so?

Teal_Beast 06-15-2006 07:07 AM

it might, if your computer is trying to adjust itself to compensate.

besides a cold start is were your problem is going to be at it's worst anyhow

spike_africa 06-15-2006 07:18 AM

did you resently add a tb and or plenum?

sounds like the cars idle is too low. could be TPS,or could be IAC. Is your car thorwing codes.

Because of what you said i would lean towards TPS is bad or broken (if you did do a tb or plenum upgrade).

Negative sir. I haven't messed with anything. Just started doing it on its own.

phatpony 06-15-2006 07:37 AM

Sounds like a bad IAC to me.

r3dn3ck 06-15-2006 08:49 AM

I'm voting bad vacuum or stuck open IAC. Maybe a PCV hose broke... something pretty good size has to be open to make it that bad.

spike_africa 06-15-2006 09:09 AM

Well then that should rule out the TPS as they dont hardly ever go bad for no reason at all.

4.6 Love 06-15-2006 09:23 AM

Spray your iac with some carb cleaner....it will solve your problem...

Slither 06-15-2006 09:32 AM

Thanks guys. After you mentioned the IAC I did some reading online and it matches my problem exactly. I will let ya know the outcome :beerchug:

Randy Stinchcomb 06-15-2006 09:32 AM

deff sounds like an IAC problem, how many miles on the car? when was the last time you changed the PVC valve? and if you have, did you buy Ford or aftermarket?

114k on it, never replaced PCV

well thiers the start of your problems, PCV valve should be changed at @30k.

what happens is by not changing the PCV valve, all that crankcase gunk get re-cirulated back thru the engine and it clogges-up the IAC valve. you'll need to goto a Ford dealer and get a new IAC & PCV, "DO NOT BUY AFTERMARKET", get genuine OEM FORD parts only. if your local dealer wont help you wth pricing, let me know.

r3dn3ck 06-15-2006 10:28 AM

hey randy... how much for the PCV. I have a spare IAC but it's getting time for me to change my PCV valve.

r3dn3ck 06-15-2006 11:18 AM

Randy Stinchcomb 06-15-2006 11:45 AM

SOHC Mustang PCV VALVES:

96 to 01 > D9ZZ-6A666-A $6.31 thru us (does not include Bullitt)
2002 (only) > 2X4Z-6A666-AA $8.76
2003 & 04 > 2C5Z-6A666-AA $29.99

Slither 06-15-2006 12:04 PM

Thanks! Going to pick up a new PCV and IAC valve now.

Randy Stinchcomb 06-15-2006 12:11 PM

ok, good. might also get a can of Seafoam or some thrttldby/carb cleaner as Im sure your intake manifild, PCV hoses and other related parts are going tobe clogged wth sludge

stevemainian 06-15-2006 12:34 PM

id say an o2 sensor.

Randy Stinchcomb 06-15-2006 12:40 PM

yup, could be those too, as O2's are usally all used up by 80k but at 115k and never changed the PCV valve, well that and the IAC are prob the cheapest and easest to change-out first

Slither 06-15-2006 12:56 PM

I seafoamed the car about a month ago.

Slither 06-17-2006 08:24 AM

IAC and PCV replaced and it WORKS!! Thanks guys for the suggestions..you hit it right on the head :beerchug:

Randy Stinchcomb 06-17-2006 08:30 AM

glad to hear all-is-well:)

now remember, 20k to 30k = change the PCV valve and ONLY use OEM:)
