Which Transmission?

Alright, I'm going to be swapping out my Auto for a manual tranny in the next few months, which tranny do you think I should get? I'm struggling between these 3: (All would be brand new/rebuilt)

1. Tremec T-56 (stock '03 tranny)
2. Tremec TKO-500
3. Tremec 3650 (stock GT tranny)

It's mostly between the latter two now, because of cost and install snags with the 6-speed.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has done an auto to manual swap, just advice, your experience, satisfaction, etc. Thanks!

What do you plan on doing with your car? Street car? Drag?

Mug11 02-22-2006 06:39 PM

Wait till the auto blows up.. not worth the money.

No kidding......but by that time i'll need a new motor so i'll just transplant a forged motor and tranny at the same time...bwahaha no point in wasting a good tranny

No thanks. I've decided and I'm not changing my mind. And to answer your question Madi98GT, it's going to be mostly a DD, with occasional visits to strips and tracks.

Madi98GT 02-22-2006 07:18 PM

Not sure how much power you are putting down, but the 3650 can take a good amount of abuse. From a cost standpoint, that's the best option.

customstang 02-22-2006 07:48 PM

My friend did a swap he said the hardest part was probably getting the new clutch pedal installed in the floor and getting the stuff cut out right.

He bought a junk tranny for like $50 and rebuilt it, ended up costing him under a grand

spike_africa 02-22-2006 07:53 PM

since you wont be drag racing much i would do the T3650 i love my tranny it takes a ton of abuse from me with many many street races, drag strip runs with drag radials and a 125shot of nitrous.

stanger00 02-22-2006 07:55 PM

i priced out everything i would need for a swap. with a rebuilt t56 the total setup was 3700. expensive. but good luck

I doubt it but does that 3700 include an install price?

For that much you can get a brand new Viper Spec T56 tranny kit from D and D Performance...

there are a lot of other items that will nickel and dime you. flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pedal's, wiring harness, crossmember, driveshaft, transmission, clutch cable, firewall quadrant, some kind of shifter, knob, and some other things. thats with the cobra spec tranny from D&D performance. add all that stuff and tell me what number you come up with

I know what you're saying but the tranny, crossmember and driveshaft are included with their kit. As well as a speedometer cable, and shifter...

As far as the other things you mentioned. When going auto to manual you'll have to purchase them anyway... but for the strengthreliability you get, as well as "cool is a six speed" factor it's worth the price. Plus you get that fuel friendly .50 overdrive vs. the .67-.70 you get with the others... You can either appreciate the mileage or you can add more gear...

obiviously you dont know what im saying because it still looks like that you dont believe that it will cost 3700-3800 for a cobra T56 swap from auto.

jjtgiants 02-23-2006 02:31 PM

I know you've said your mind is already made up, but why not keep the tranny you have and get a tuner and firm up the shift points and replace some stock parts to strengthen it up a bit......Auto's can be quite nice and very consistant if you have it tuned right. I don't know what mods you have, but if the car is a DD why are you so set on doing a swap?? I'm not critcizing you I'm just curious cause it's a whole lot of money to spend....but of course it's your car and money :beerchug:

Totally agree. Never said I didn't. But for that price you can probably get the whole thing done for that with a NEW "Cobra" T56, which is why I did mention that the "Viper T56" kit costs that much with a NEW transmission minus things we already covered.

The only reason why I even mentioned it was because you said that would be your cost for a USED swap...

didn't mean to hijack or upset you...

Good luck with it.

Because without it my car feels so boring, it's just like driving any other car in many ways. Also, I love driving and I think that manuals are so much more fun to drive and put you in better control of the car. It also gives you something to do while you are driving and just gets you more involved in the driving process. Basically, it's just something I've always wanted ever since I drove one for the first time.

(PS-I've pretty much decided on the T56)

CCM 02-23-2006 06:31 PM

Alright, I've made a list of all the little nitty-gritty parts I need, and I've found place to buy all of them except these 3:

1. Stock Clutch/Brake Pedal Assembly
2. Shifter Bezel
3. Manual Wiring Harness

Does anyone know anywhere I can get these parts?

I understand where your coming from.....to me that's a lot of money to spend especially when it's not going to make you one bit faster or corner better ect.....Good luck I guess
