Default Chevy rear end question...

by no means am i a chevy guy...but ill support other enthusiasts if you know what i mean. BUT...i have a 12 bolt rear out of a mid 70's truck setup for leaf springs...will that bolt into a 99-02 Z28 camaro? obviously my buddy would have to cut off the leaf springs and do a coil over conversion...is the whole process possible without breaking the bank?

Of course you can make it work. You need to see how wide it is first. If its to wide you will have to cut the tubes shorter and reweld them. Then weld on the pickup points for the suspension and clean it,paint it, and rebuild the guts and your good.

Sounds easy doesn't it lol.

There will be a lot of welding involved, since you have to convert it from leaf spring to coils, add lower control arm mounts, and then F-Bodies have a torque arm, so you'll have to fabricate a mount for that up as well. That is after you shorten it to fit under the car, have the axles shortened and resplined, etc etc.

sounding like too many strings attached with that...ill just tell him to buy something that is a bolt in replacement. the ford 9" is the same as a 12 bolt right?

well the 9 inch is different but from what ive read they have some similarities.. But as far as i know, most drag cars always use a 9inch, its made by ford but other places market the 9 inch housing. i may have completely ruined this thread, i just thought drag car immediately..

9" and 12 bolt are comparable but not the same.

I'd use a bolt-in 9" myself. You can get a ready to bolt on kit from any number of sources. Currie Enterprises comes to mind, so does Strange Engineering. Not cheap but if you're beyond reason with the power or you're just mean to your rear end, these are the ticket.
