Default Radar Question

I know we have some law enforcement officers on these boards, if I could remember who you are I would PM you, so now I will have to air my shame to the public.

I recently got a speeding ticket in a very small town here in TN, known for it's speed traps, I knew better, so let it go. I was driving the magnum and was exactly side-by-side with a jeep cherokee coming around a curve downhill. I smiled nicely and took my ticket.

Today I went to court and argued that it was not possible for the officer to determine which vehicle was actually speeding and I only got the ticket because I was in the left lane. The judge assured me that radar could isolate vehicles even side-by-side from an oncoming police car. I still seriously doubt this, but I do know better than to argue that point.

He was nice enough to reduce my ticket to 50 in a 45 which isn't reportable as long as I paid the fine. Which i did, since I figure they are just wanting to boost the city income.

So how accurate are radars??

P.S. A radar detector is in my future.

Where'd you get the ticket?

As far as I know Radar is not as accurate as lazer, but I'm sure they could probably isolate one vehicle from another.

A kid started a topic on radar detectors a while back and I dug it out for you.

https://mustangboards.com/lounge/350...-detector.html

Good for you for actually fighting for yourself instead of just taking it up the *** like other people do. Slim03GT is a cop, so maybe he can give you more details regarding the isolation of the radar.

I have a cheap-*** Cobra radar detector (the only Cobra I have ), and it fails to detect a lot of times. For instance, I'll be passing a cop in a speed trap and I can see the cop with their gun out and my detector won't go off until I'm like 5-10 yards away from the cop. I think I'm going to save up and invest in a better one.

Theres a couple different types of radar. One is like a physics/dopplar radar in which it would be impossible to tell which car was doing what if they are side by side. Another type is Laser. Its like a gun, you put the little red dot on a single vehicle and it gives you the speed of that vehicle. Chances are the cop had the laser on your vehicle instead of the guy next to you

The thing with shitty detectors is they also set off the good ones like my V1. Every time we have a meet either you or Sean set mine off.

Haha I have a cobra somewhere. Their detection range is absolutely horrible.

You either want a beltronics pro, escort passport, or valentine 1. Those are really the only three good brands.

Hahahaha! Even when I get a good one, I will put up my shitty one just to keep getting on your nerves!

I just can't justify spending $300+ on a radar detector. All I can think of is how that money can go towards cams or suspension.

I got my ticket in Dover!! I think that's about all they got going for their economy right now.

The cops only said "radar", so I'm not sure if it was a laser or not, but as small a town as it was, I'm pretty sure it was just radar.

LMAO! Yeah, they just need the extra $$.. I mean really, what's in Dover? They probably can't even afford Laser, hell I don't even think Hendersonville/Gallatin or even Metro have many cars equipped with laser, maybe 10-15 combined..

You say that, but saving yourself from one good ticket is worth the price of the unit alone. I take my car to NC, the Florida keys (where I'm from), Melbourne, Tampa a lot and it cuts the travel time down a lot and it keep me from getting tickets otherwise. Its well worth it if you speed on the highway like I do cause who wants to do 70-75 anyhow? My car gets best mpg going 85ish mph.

I'm a damn slow-poke, so I don't really have to worry about tickets. But if they relly used radar, I'd be pissed because there is no way they could specify out of two cars side-by-side. Lazer could, but not radar.

I saw you post that before. That is the best deal going right now for sure. Its right up there with the V1 for sure. Its a great detector, but like they say once you have the arrows you can't live without them.

Are you kidding? $150 for an escort passport. I think I might buy that right now. I've never seen them for under $275. Even refurbished that's an awesome price.

Its very useful to know whats going on. Say a cop is far behind me and it lets me know, I just keep on doing my thing and don't worry unless the signal starts to get stronger aka he is catching up to me. Same goes for cars ahead etc.. Once you drive with one you will understand.

I got a ticket from an officer on a road around my house yesterday evening after work. 51 in a 35, and I was the only ******* car on the ******* road. Road was clear, no clouds, still bright out, and a comfortable 75. Boy was I being dangerous. So I continue to the movie theater, enjoy my movie, and left.

On my way home, a guy passes me at about 100 miles an hour, swerves in and between me and this guy going down the road, flies through a red light, slams on his brakes at the next one, then flies through that one. Me and a guy in a stingray corvette pull up to the next light, and going the other way, there's a cop who didn't do **** about it.I nearly lost my ******* head, the guy in the stingray started screaming "WHAT THE ****? WAS THAT EVEN REAL? THIS IS WHY SPEEDING TICKETS ARE BULLSHIT, GUYS LIKE THAT GET AWAY WITH IT AND WE GET ******* PULLED OVER FOR 10 OVER BECAUSE WE'RE DRIVING SPORTS CARS"

I kindof understand speeding tickets, but in the end they are just for revenue generating, when they could use the manpower they use in speed traps for ******* REAL traffic patrol, and actually ticket people like that guy who was in front of me.

Lol yea, also i noticed this a bit, but if you travel in the slow lane when theres no traffic, cops seem to not consider you as much. Then again my towns so small cops are probably just guestimating what speed im going

No, you're right. They definitely keep an eye on the left lane a lot more. I try to stay out of it, unless there's a lot of traffic.

I forgot to mention the best part, when the judge was telling why he was letting me off without putting it on my record, he said:
"I can tell by your record you don't habitually speed"
And I had to stand there with a straight face and agree, I never do the speed limit unless I'm in the gutless wonder.

Apparently you've been getting some low quality BJ's A discounted radar dectector doesn't even get me to pucker. As far as the noodz, I'm afraid if I sent them you would rub yourself raw. So for your own protection I will keep them under lock and key.
