Default My previous hobby...

This thread is about my previous hobby, car audio. I used to be insane with this stuff. After a certain point, it goes beyond product and into the world of physics using techniques such as 1/4 waving at the mic and amung other stuff.

I used to compete with my 94 beretta in SPL. It was a daily driven vehicle doing 145dB on a termlab in the kickpanel, and 143 in reality SPL which is at the drivers ear. I had a Resonant Engineering XXX 12 powered by a Resonant Engineering LE 35.1 Limited Edition which had the output of about 1700w rms at 1 ohm. It was in a 3 cube box after all displacments of sub and port, tuned to 33hz.

Like I said above, car was a 1994 Beretta, nothing special. I had an Alpine 7894 with custom 7995 deck face, with 7894 internals. Also had Optima red top and KnuKonceptz 1/0 wiring, Crossfire P1C4 components, and MA Audio 6x9s that I scooped up for cheap. RE xxx 12, RE 35.1LE, and custom box that I made. I also had about 50 sq ft of Second Skin DampX sound deadner with a layer of STFU-80 (its called stfu based on a car audio forum vote and its 80mm thick) on my trunk lid to help reduce rattling outside and keeping the sound inside. My entire trunk was done from top to bottom, front to back, and side to side.

Heres some pictures.

Yes, theres even a video!
Playing: Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz - Throw it up

This is what I usually played for Reality SPL. For usual metering id play solid 38hz tones, sometimes 39hz. Yeah it did 145db on termlab at 38hz.

And we cant forget my 1997 single cab S10 that took 5th place at world finals in 0-150 basic consumer. Audio system consisted of Optima Yellow Top, Alpine CDA-7977, MB Quart PSD 216, MB Quart PWD 254 (2 10s), Phoenix Gold 400.2ti (componets), Phoenix Gold 400.2ti (subs), and Phoenix Gold was used for all wiring. Here are some OLD pictures of it...

Loudest system I ever heard in person was a Wrangler that had the entire rear walled off and had 6 18's! Thing was insane!

Is it 152dB or 162dB that you actually lose control of your body functions? (start drooling, nose running, and sometimes pee on yourself?)`

140db is the threshold of pain occuring because of the decible level. 170 will kill you. 3 decible incriments is actually 2x as loud. Ive sat in 160db vehicles and its not really fun.

It's not an instant death like most people think but that's when it starts causing brain damage and literally blows your ear drumbs. Those think on top of each other usually lead to death.

Yeah its the pressure that kills you. You are unable to breath, your ear drums become under serious pressure and blow out, and with that im sure your heart experiences trouble beating and pumping blood and oxygen throughout your system. loudest car ive ever seen was an el camino doing 172 with a single DD 9918 with oodles and oodles of power.

Well I got lucky with the price. There was a group buy I got in on for that and I paid 350 shipped for the woofer and I also had a buddy who worked for RE at the time. The amp I had was a Limited Edition and there was about 50 in the world. It was the same as the others internally but just a different case. I got that for 350 shipped as well. I made the box, and I forgot the pricing on the headunit. I think I got the components on ebay for 60 bucks new and the 6x9s for 40 from a buddy who worked at MA Audio. I had quite a few hookups back when I was serious.

hey matt, you would like my old setup. i hit 158 at blood drag with the front passenger door cracked and 154 with all the doors closed. it was in a pt cruiser with 2 matts procast 12" subs and an mtx amp. i just put one of those 12's into my mustang a couple weeks ago. i dont have any pics at work but i can look when i get home. that car had everything.

I used to be REALLY into car and home audio but I kinda stopped when i got the mustang until like a month ago I was helping my friend put my old dvd player into his car and i remembered how much i liked it

Of course they would, GT's are no better than the V6's as far as interior is concerned, V6's can have all of the same options (except the 17" wheels, I think)

matt...

quick ques...

My car has these 2 huge 12" 2000watt subs, the magnets are almost as big as the speakers them selves... then I have this big chrome amp with lights on it... all audiobahn... got it used relatively cheap, but my friend said the original owner paid close to or more then 2 grand for em...

so I have good bass

then I have the 4 pioneer, as big as I could fit, in the doors and rear panels...

problem... I turn bass way down cause its just to much for the mid/trebble or whatever... i asume ya get the point...

how should I go about makin that louder?

I have a good pioneer head unit...

Can ya recomend a certain amp for the speakers?

I was also thinkin it'd be cool to tuck a 12" speaker somewhere in there... but I want to do it right... I don't wanna ****** rig nothing...

lol... like a big speaker out of a marshall amp...

suggestions?

ok, good to know the mach was available to all models.

got any idea if a the "premium" option was supposed to come with a particular stereo? I dont think I had a mach anything in my car...a "premium" GT.
I think you have the same one I have, is it 2 singles, FM/AM/Casette above, CD below?

I think the 6 CD changer for the Mach's didn't come around till 2002 with that actually decent double decker headunit. We got screwed.

Amp your speakers. Personally id run Macrom, Arc, Rainbow, ect... but you wouldnt want to pay that much. Id say look into an Alpine or keep your setup with audiobahn.

That one is interesting, but I'm almost certain that's the standard head unit, as the mach one has markings on it and says 6 CD CHANGER, you could probably swap that one out for the mach easily, though.

I'll get a pic of mine tommorrow, it's hideous.
