Default need some rearend help please!

hello my name is wendell, and i have a problem with my 65 mustang. i pulled the ring and pinion out of the rearend to clean everything and everything was okay so i go to put it back in and i cant figure how to set it where it will be back in the same wear pattern.it is a 8" rearend, an intergral type. i was hoping someone could tell me how to get it back to where it was. i never removed any pinion races just removed tge carrier bearings and pulled the ring gear out. thanks wendell.

Haul the car to a rearend shop. You'll never get it together within specs without the proper tools and knowhow. If you do get it together it will prob whine and cause unusual wera patterns.

As sad as that seems, hes right. The rear end has certain specs it has to be within and if its not you get unusual wear, noisey rear end, or even damage to it. A professional should be handling that job.

If you didn't lose anything when you took it apart, then putting it back together really shouldn't be an issue.( as long as you re-assemble it the same way you took it apart nothing should change ) It won't hurt to check your clearences after you re-assemble it to make sure it's right. If you are installing new gears then it's a must to shim them to the right specs. Buy a Haynes or Chilton book/manual for your car. That will give you the info you need and you can at least double check your clearences before you finalize things. Also was your rear end making any noises before you took it apart? If so, then it would definately be a good idea to re-shim it correctly.

I would probably have a pro do it for you. Unless you know how much backlash you had to start with or how much you should have, don't bother. If you know, and have a magnetic dial indicator to check it with and its not in spec, a .001" shim equals roughly .001" backlash. If you get it wrong, it will moan and whine.
