Default Gears and Gas

Was talking to a mechanic today about installing new gears in the stang. He told me that 3.73 would lower my milage down to about 10mpg. Would like to hear from some of you guys that are actually running with them about the milage you are getting?

Just someone who doesn't fully understand what happens. In the city alot of times you get better mileage as the car gets up to speed easier. On the highway you will loose a few 2-3mpg is about it.

Ditto, if you decide to go with gears dont let this guy do it. Gears are probably one of the best mods you can do to these cars. Just choose the the right ratio for your driving style.

The guy might have memories of old big block cars going from 3.08 to 3.73 w/ no overdrive.

Thanks. This was the mechanic at the Ford dealership in Nashville. He was relating a story of another customer who had a roush and reported getting that crappy gas milage and having the gears removed. He seemed to be a pretty knowlegable guy, but pretty young. He was great about fixing the drain plug and was floored because I was listening to godsmack, disturbed and few other recent bands. I'm old...I'm not dead. He said the dealership would install new gears for between $600-$800. Not sure if that's a good deal but it sounds reasonable. He was trying to sell me a roush sc but I don't want to go that route.

Does that 600$ include all of the hardware, or the gears itself? lol. $600 for an install cost alone is ridiculous.

Unless you drive through nasty rush hour traffic everyday, there's something wrong if your mileage is 14 mpg.

Do the newer S197 come with the 3.27 gears like the SN95 do? Thats a good price if that includes everything.

depends on how you drive and other factors

I have a K&N CAI worked into a Mach 1 shaker ram air type setup, it definatly breathes better than stock especially with the K&N Filter.

Also, i have a diablosport tune that helps a little bit as well

Normally i dont do any highway driving with my mustang, the gears/tuner actually seemed to help a little bit.

The BEST fuel economy i managed in the city (no racing, no gunning, no hauling *** just normal driving) was 250 miles on the trip counter, and i filled the tank back up i only put in just over 13 gallons, so i managed to get 19 MPG...

The worst i managed was 13mpg by hauling *** and messing around.

on average ill get between 17-19... i really dont race much, sometimes i gun it, but not that often.

I used to get 17-18mpg in the city all the time. Once i went catless I dropped alot. I need a tune badly to fix my a/f ratio with my mods and so I make more power on the bottle. i even got 30.4mpg on the highway a few times going back and forth to NC for the summer for vacation. Last summer it was only doing 24-26mpg so mine needs to be tuned to get that a/f ratio back in check.

I don't know if they've changed or not, but when I bought my 05, the gears were 3.55 for auto's and 3.73 for 5-spd.

I went from about 18mpg city, and 24-26mpg hwy, to about 14-16mpg city and 21-23mpg hwy after my change to 4.10's with a 5spd.

Before my 4.10's i used to get about 13mpg in the city. Now with the 4.10's i'm getting about 14.5. Highway mpg will most likely decrease by 2.
