so i was driving going baout 15mph and all of a sudden i keep hearing this clanking sound underneath the car by the rear tires, it gets louder and louder. all of the sudden its like someone just ripped the E-Brake, it stopped on a dime. if i tried to accel(it was still in drive) i didnt go anywhere. then i tried backing up and when i did the rear tires felt like they kept losing traction with the pavement and jerking. then i went in drive again and stopped at the gas station and called dad and he brought his truck and trailer and hauled it home. now its in the garage and
![]() any idea what it could be? EDIT** it really makes the noise loud when i put on my brakes. its at the rear of the car. Last edited by V6_Mustang_Power : 04-05-2008 at 09:37 PM. |

Yeah, my vote is for something with the rear brakes or parking brake.
Give us more info when you get it. |

diff is FRAGGED. Spider gear probably broke and wedged against the carrier and case. Get a new used rear end and enjoy. If you have a v6 buy a 8.8" rear from a GT for an upgrade.

well i told my girlfriends dad about it and he said "sounds like the diff's or transmission". so he's like if you want me to check it out for you i can sometime, i dont have alot of free time though. so abit later he came where me and his duaghter were and he was like " wanna go checkout your mustang?" i was like sure..
so i told him i was also gonna stop by blockbuster to rent a movie and then he was like oh ok, hop im my car.(he has a S/C grandprix GTP) omfg it felt soooo much faster than my 6'er and was way faster. so we got to my house and i opend the garage and he got his computer thingy out and he started it and etc. and he found out it was the rear end gear diff. so he then hooked up the computer to see if it came back with any other stufff and nope. he said he really like my mustang though. i always thought he hated it cause of the comments he says. so then we went into blockbuster, GOD DAMN he passed like 10 cars on the way there, he was like "Sunday drivers" i was like " maybe i should have went to the bathroom before i left" lmao. i was jokin though. then after we got done at blockbuster we were on our way back to his house and we passed a Z06 Vette and i told him about it earlier and when we passed it he was like "damn, i would have a blast in that thing". then on the way home we were talking about burning out and he pulled off onto a country raod and was like " for shits an giggles lets see if we can raost them from a dead stop" so we let a car passs us then we turned around... we also past another yellow 6'er and he was like " i sure in the hell like yours better than that one" he f*cking did a 15ft Posi burnout, no joke, their was smoke comming through the a/c vents into the car and lmao the inside of the car was filled with smoke and smell of fresh burnt rubber . then we went home.and he was like oh btw, if you ever need help working on your car lemme know with anything and if them morons dont get the rear end fixed he said he could put in a 8.8" rear end and t-lock and 4.10's. |

just put the stock tires/rims back on it.
g/f's dad suggested me too, cause if the place see's i had drag tires on it they will think im just burning it up at a track or so and will blame us for it. |

I wouldnt go through that trouble of changeing the rims and tires myself. Hell your car is an '01 so it is surely out of warranty wich means that repair is being paid for with hard earned cash. If I am paying for something to be repaired I dont give a damn what they "think" I have been doing. In fact... if the repair is being paid for by a customer then it really dont matter if the customer took a hammer and cutting torch to it purposely. All that matters is the customer is willing to pay up after the repair.
Just my 2 cents worth.

haha yeah no worries about the tires. That car is way out of warranty. Hopefully its not to expensive of a fix. If you do need a rear end I would just find a new one instead of having ford repair it. Ford will cost wayyyyyyyy more than it has to be

hopefully you got an 8.8 rear end, otherwise I'd say it was a bad move to let them put in a 7.5 unless you had to due to your warranty.

i asked them about that, i asked them if they could put a 8.8" one in and they said no, they had to go what was in it before. then i asked them if they could put new gears in for me and they said "no it would be best to have ford do that". piss on ford, they would want a thousand dollars to do it prolly. they were like " well atleast you will have a new rear end in".
so after i get it back im ordering me gears+bearing kit friday(i have the money now but yeah, gonna wait). then gonna have g/f's dad install them for cheap. |

If you're getting a new rear end, why get new bearings?

Well, a new rear end is going to have all new parts so why buy new bearings when you have new ones already in there. The reason why people usually get bearings w/ gears is they have miles on their rear end so while in there, might as well replace them.
