x-pipe or h-pipe

ok so i am looking to get a off-road x-pipe or an off-road h-pipe for my 2000 GT. does anybody know what the difference is (besides the shape)???? advantages to getting one over the other????

blownstang 03-03-2008 10:24 AM

slight difference in sound. x pipe is more high pitched and a little raspy, while an h pipe is more of a deep muscle car sound. x pipe is supposed to produce more horespower, while an h pipe more torque, but the difference is minimal. 1-2 rwhp and torque difference. Just get whichever one you want and like the sound of.

Id get whichever would be cheaper

It all pretty much comes down to personal preference. Things are going to sound different depending on exhaust you have and so on. Listen to some clips or videos and make a decision based on what you hear. I have a few videos in my sig of of my cars exhaust. I have flows, o/r x-pipe, and LT headers.

ok cool. thanks for that. wat would a shop usually charge for the item and to install? i checked with my local shop and they said for x-pipe without cats $900 and x-pipe with cats $500. is this about right?

I'm assuming that's to custom fab one up? If I were you, I'd buy an aftermarket one since it's a lot cheaper, even w/ install. For example, a $200 for a cat-less mid-pipe, $150 for cats, and $200 to install cats is $550. Mid-pipe w/ cats already on are around $400 so you can see the price reduction here.

you can get a Mac o/r h pipe for under $200, and a catted one for under $400. If you go used you can get them even cheaper. Installation of just the midpipe should be around $75 - $100.

I went to a performance shop and they charged me $100 cash to install.

I dont know how mechanically inclined you are, buts its not a hard install and its not hard to do. I would recommend to most people to give it a shot to install it. Its pretty straight forward and you will save that cash.

worse comes to worse, atleast take your stocks off and request a discount for some work being done already...and like they said no not hard at all

Mr. Zip 03-04-2008 10:02 PM

What does all of this mean in my case? I have straight pipes from the headers to the tips. Is it just a change of sound then?

spike_africa 03-05-2008 06:34 AM

You dont need a cross over pipe on v6s as there even firing so this doesnt apply to the 3.8 cars.

HokieStang00 03-05-2008 07:38 AM

I'm surprised anyone can even get a quote for off-road pipes. If you get caught, the shop that did the work can also be held liable and fined. No one around here will install a catless mid-pipe.

PureStang 03-06-2008 04:57 PM

most places will allow you to get them installed as long as you sign a waiver.

btw....i got my o/r mac h pipe for $70 barely used.
