Cobra '96 - running hot
 

I have a '96 Cobra but notice that in traffic that is a start & stop situation the temp.goes up a bit.Do you think the rad needs to be cleaned or should it be replaced.The car only has 23,000 miles on it & is only used on rare occasions.Appreciate any help.

The 96 models had a TSB on the cooling system since they were horrible. If you haven't upgraded yet, do so.

try flushing it out though, and maybe replace the thermostat for a 180* one. Thats a cheap fix.

is the cooling fan clicking on like its supposed to? Your problem will be either the radiator,thermostat, and cooling fan if its not leaking anything....possibly a fan relay....

It could very well be the fan relay acting up.Will replace that first as that's the most inexpensive way to start.Most likely coming on too late.Thanks again for the pointer.

let us know what fixes the problem...im curious

Will keep you posted as have set up time with mechanic.My first thought is just to wire the fan direct so it comes on when started instead of on the relay but it might shorten life of fan motor.Will let you know any which way.

Still, when you get the cash, get the factory upgrade. The issues w/ the 96 cars is that the radiator wasn't efficiant and when the AC is on, it's even worse.

you can forget about asking the dealer for help wth this, not only was the "coolant kit" discontinued a year ago but when it was discontinued the list price was $2200.00 and NO thats NOT a typo.

what part of the country are you in?
a few things you can do to help is by going to a 1997 up A/C condensor and an aftermarket radiator like a Fluidyne

Would you believe i actually live in Antigua in the Caribbean.I think your suggestion is a good one in that i will just order an after market one.I am pretty sure this will solve the whole problem.Any idea what price i might be looking at as shipping to here can be quite high.

Sent Jason an email asking for a quote on the new rad so waiting on reply.Have arranged for next week with mechanic as he thinks the fan is not kicking in early enough through a faulty relay.Keep you guys posted & thanks again for all the most useful pointers.

They reason it overheats wasn't the fan it was the stock radiator couldn't handle it i do recall.

So hard wiring the fan is not gonna fix it the cooling system just isn't good enough. You need to replace that stock radiator with a good aftermarket one like randy said.

I am waiting on a response from Steen & American Muscle for a price on a new rad so when i order it i will keep you posted on how it works.It will take a few weeks to have it shipped & installed.Appreciate all the help guys!!!!
