Does the TOB have to be replaced immediately?

I know this topic is on here all the time, but I can't find a straight answer. Does the TOB have to be replaced right away? What happens if it is not addressed soon enough?

Thanks

Throw Out Bearing? If so, those thngs can squeak forever and I would not worry about it. Replacing them cost about $450 from a shop in labor and often leak after the swap. Just wait until you want a new clutch.

the worst that could happen is a bit of scoring on your input shaft to the tranny. That'd be really expensive to fix. Still...it takes a long while to get there and there have to be other factors to get that bad.

Do what I do... just put it in neutral and let the clutch out when you're not actively in gear. It takes a bit to get used to but it'll save that 450 bucks till it's clutch time. When you get a new one... get the all metal one. There's a thread here with the part you'll need... just search for TOB.

When you upgrade your clutch... the bearing gets replaced. Mine's been squeaking for like 3 months now. Not a lot... but when the tranny gets hot it does it.

Yes, I normally sit in neutral at lights and things. The only thing is that when the tranny is cold, if I put the car in neutral as I am rolling it makes this god aweful sound like pea gravel in a blender. It goes away after it warms up, but on hot days it makes the loud squeaking sound once in a while.

you need to have your clutch inspected. There's something definitely not right in there. You don't want to have a bigger problem. the whole gravel sound is a sign something may be going seriously wrong.

Your call but that's my advice to you.

I had a ford tech I know in KC tell me that is was my TOB at a meet we were at. It goes away when it gets warm and it does sound like bad bearings so I am assuming it will be okay.

What it could be is that when the engine warms up, the heat expands the cable letting pressure off your TOB. Try re-adjusting the cable to see if that helps. I know for mine there's a fine line between the clutch pedal vibrating and having the TOB squeal loud enough to hear above the 2,000 rpm drone.

I've just decided I'm going to get it replaced and have a spec stage 1 installed while the tranny is off.
