me vs an ls2 gto
ok so yesterday i got a red light an i seen this black gto coming behind me switched lanes an didnt get right next to me stayed at the light about my back fender for some reason so light turns green he stays right next to me an revs it so i rev it too an he smiles an i know his car is badass an he knows its badass this guy was like 50-60 years old so anyways he points to race an we jump on it surprising i pulled ahead at the start an kept him their til about 80 then we hit a light with a z06 in front of us he didnt pull next to me i was gunna tell him hey bro love ur car u should have killed me prolly
dont the ls2 put out like 425 stock? should have killed me an he prolly didnt know how to drive most of you will say i wasnt paying attention how he was driving though
my mods are accufab 75mm tb an plenium ford racing headers magnaflow x pipe slp loudmouth1 85 mm maf, mac fender well cold airintake, fullyported intake manifold, bbk underdrive pullies, sct2 programmer, zex 75 shot , 4.10 gears, royal purple oil, an thats about it i think
im not bragging or sayin i killed him just saying its a badass car how would i compare with it why did he not put busses on me? i know ls1's an ls2s are extreme an stangs need major power to kill them but this one was ls2 it said 6.0 on the back an had the hood scoops an dual exhaust out back

it's pretty hard to make up for a 600lb weight penalty. I'd be interested to know how a car rated at 400bhp is only putting down 300... standard losses even on the big side would land them at 325+ to the ground. I think someone overrated their engines... GM. At least ford underrates theirs. I like happy surprises like finding more power than I thought was there but I'd probably be pretty terse about finding less than I paid for.

my dad's bone stock corvette C5 feels alot faster then my GT and its only got the LS1, from what I know they weigh around 3600LBS, so the GTOs with the LS2 even weighing 200LBS more then the Vette should haul ***, but most of u with GTO kills did say u had spray...... makes a big difference. My opinion: GTOs = Bad *** cars, Stangs on spray = Very bad *** cars.

I'm sorry, but stock C5 vettes do not weigh 3600lbs. Try between 3150-3250 depending on what model. The LS2 GTOs weigh around 3800lbs. Thats a heavy *** car. You dads C5 vette feels a lot faster than your GT because it has just about a good 100hp more plus a few hundred pounds lighter. I have stayed just about side by side with a LS2 GTO and I have just bolt ons. I'm not saying GTOs are super slow, but for a 400hp car they ain't nothing special.
I still think GTO=*** and sound like crap.
By the way, this is an old thread.

traction control doesnt decrease power when its not activated. it uses wheel speed sensors to detect when the rear wheels are spinning faster than the fronts are then brakes the wheel (or wheels) or cuts back power when activated.
#17
if you dont spin and traction control is on but not activated, your car doesnt have any change in horsepower levels.
#19
The traction control on the GTO's and other Pontiac's cut fuel and timing causing a dramatic power loss. Any smart person would know cut that crap off if they are going run the car hard unless they are scared of spinning tires. When i had my mustang still it was a rutine thing to get in and cut the Trac-cont off before even putting my seatbelt on unless it was raining.

I talked to some chevy guys (trying to get both sides of this story) and even they admited that the GTO is a dog. mostly cause of weight I guess. they all seemed to agree that the Formula firebirds and T/As were faster with only the Ls1 against Ls2 GTOs, It's a shame 'cause I think they GTOs r really good looking cars plus since Pontiac can't get rid of the left overs, u can get a cheap used one. But weight is a tough probolem to fix (while keeping it comfortable for DD)

First, Ls1 GTO's put down 290-300whp while Ls2 goats put down 330-345whp stock with autos being on the low end... As you can see form my sig, with catback, air filter and tune, I am putting down 365/360 to the road.
My experiences are based on the Ls2 goat, which has an electronic throttle and tons of computer management (most of can be adjusted with a tune)
I have very little track experience but I took my car to a 'GTO' day when it was stock and managed to run mid to upper 13's (@103ish) all day in 110+ heat and traction control on the whole time.
On traction control and reduced fuel and timing: the traction control is very non-intrusive on Goats. It won't kick in if both wheels are spinning, but when it does, the car bogs like it's towing a 10,000lb trailer. However, you don't need to have traction control engage for it to pull timing. Basically, if the car thinks it's about to be 'abused' (like popping the clutch), it will reduce performance (1st, 2nd, and 3rd only). Supposed to help drive train reliability/durability.
Fortunately for GTO owners, a tune can remove most of the reduction...
On racing...
yes the gto weighs in at a hefty 3800lbs but it is rock solid and a car you can drive comfortably all day long...
launching is the GTO's weak point; lots of weight, skinny tires and IRS (allows for tons of wheel hop) make pulling a 2.0 60ft verry difficult...
Stock for Stock the only mustangs an Ls2 goat has to worry about are the supercharged ones probably '03 or newer...
I personally have had the honor of racing two cobras (both from 60ish rolls), the first time shortly after I got my car, the cobra was barely creeping away from me, the second right after my air filter and catback but before tune and I barely crept away from him...
I couldn't tell you the years cause (no offense, but) all those mustangs look the same to me but I know neither where the 'retro' version; the second one had the svt badge and the first one was not stock...
I have destroyed every other mustang to challenge me. I have also killed every f-body that wanted to 'test it' including a Camaro SS with an Ls1 and at least long tubes...
I recently raced a c5 vette from a 50mph roll, he started in second, me in third; He got a jump by about 1/2 a car but we ran even until I got close to the top of third and started to gain a little, but as soon as we shifted to fourth it was even acceleration again... GTO owners will tell you it's a drivers race with a c5 but I'd give the edge to the c5...
I guess my point is, don't underestimate the goat...
BTW, i understand this is a mustang forum so I have my flame suit on...
I also understand stock for stock is one thing, but when it comes to modding all bets are off...fast is fast

Now I'm not saying GTOs are slow, but if I'm gonna have a 400hp car, I want it to perform like a 400hp car. Stock for stock, yeah your goat will beat my GT (260bhp), but I've raced a LS2 goat with exhaust and pretty much stayed with him. My front end was right around his side mirror. Not bad for having headers, exhaust, intake, and mail order tune. I just wish those cars didn't weigh 3800lbs, just like I wish the new GT500s didn't weigh almost 4000lbs. Sports cars or high horsepower cars like that shouldn't weigh that much.

we should commend our goat pilot newb though. He came into a stang forum to compare cars and didn't start any fights with his first post. Congrats!
I think the GTO makes a better street car but it loses something at the track for all those street manners. The car seems to have been designed without any acceptance of the fact that muscle car drivers like to whip their rides at the track once in a while. They just designed a comfy street beast and left the real gearheads to figure out how to overcome the IRS, TC, weight, and pushrods.
It does make a decent corner carver if you toy a bit with the suspension. Seen a couple do some autocrossing... not bad.

I know people bash the boring body style of the GTO's, but I've seen some pretty sweet GTO's around where I live....There was a black one at the car wash and I said to myself "wow, what a sweet GTO" Then a big fat azz chick got out of the car so that kind turned me off! ha ha ha.
Anyway, I have mad respect for GTO's and haven't had the honor of getting spanked by an LS2, but I know a lot of mach 1's were spanking the LS1 GTO's stock for stock in the 1/4 with 40 less HP. I imagine the weight difference canceled out the 40HP difference and the IRS wasn't as good at the track....that's probably why they got a HP bump in 05-06.
Regardless, GTO's are pretty cool cars in my book.

yes im attacking. i dont have the fastes car around but, you too are making it seem like you are untouchable

ah don't let it bother you....I have no issue with Jeredan2003, but that's always been his attitude. He can NEVA LOSE!

Even the guys that have stripped their GTO's to make as light as possible have only managed to lose 200-250 lbs. I did a little weight reduction to see, took out the rear seats, some deadening material, etc but the increase in road noise made me put it all back.
The GTO definitely doesn't know if it's a muscle car that thinks it can tour or a touring car trying to be muscle...what was GM's target market? (nobody knows and it doesn't exist)

I thought I was trying to clear some misinformation about stock GTO's based on my experiences- Sorry to offend! I guess you putting in your sig what you put down isn't ghey?
I am quite aware there is always something faster. My worst death was to a 1998 911t that I got the jump on by 3/4 length from a dig, but by the top of second, he had a full car on me and pulling away so fast I thought I was in fifth...
