Question timing

ok can anyone help i need to know how to cold time a 94 gt i just put the 347 stroker back into it and now i cant for the life of me find out how to cold time it i think im doing it right for the most part i put the #1 cylinder at top dead center of compression stroke then i put the rotor pointing at the #1 plug on the cap and drop the distributor in then i put all the wires on right and all it does is backfire a little the question i have is how do you know where to put the distributor into the motor are there points or what i just drop it in but then i realized that its probably sparking when the valves are open or something cause i dont put the distributor in the motor at the right spot can someone PLEASE help me!!!!

make sure that you put it on the compression stroke of #1.

Make sure you have #1 @compression, you want to make sure without removing the valve cover?....just take #1 spark plug, plug it with a piece of napkin or rag very tight and either crank it by hand or tap the starter in short strokes till the rag/napkin gets spit out by the compression. Align the TDC mark and install the dist. with the rotor pointing to #1 plug position with the TFI module pointing to the 4-5 o'clock position, looking at it from the top. Rotate the dist. to the 5-6 o'clock position (using the TFI as reference looking at it from the top), check your firing order and you should be able to start it up @8-11° btdc that way. Wew.....what a procedure anh? Hope this helps. LUK/GL.
