you get lag because you spun the sh!t outta your tires and your not going as fast you think.
lets say you floor it at 50 miles per hour and the rpms jump to redline so you shift to 3rd and all of sudden your down at 2k rpms and only going 65mph. this happens because your car is spinning and not gaining any momentum.
