I don't know much about "short throw" shifters.

Can someone fill me in?

Do they allow the driver to shift faster (I assume)--if so, why? How do they differ mechanically from stock shifters?

badically shortens your shifts it will be almost impossible to miss third gear when racing or just getting on it hard

the best one you could get in my own opinion is the mgw short throw shifter it has recieve many awards as other shifter have not and i bought it for my stang

Yes, the shifts will be alot shorter therefor making it easier and faster to shift. The shifter handle itself will be very short and it the shifter will protect your tranny when you powershift and keep your shift forks in good shape. :)

You have three options for shifters.
Steed triax=awsome shifter
MGW= Most people think this is the best shifter, but i think its all in preference.

Pro5.0= Awsome shifter, i have one on my 02 with a upr adjustable handle and i couldn't be happier.

Price wise they are all around $160 plus shipping.

I just want to clarify what you are asking?

Any Mustang shifter can be turned into a short throw shifter for about $15! All you need to do is to get a shorter handle. It is a 15 minute swap.

Now, an after-market shifter is a whole different animal. They run about $150 to $220 and essentially change out the entire shifter mechanism. The advantage is that they shift much more solid, have practically no play in them, prevent you from braking your shift forks during hard shifting, and help ensure that shifts do not get missed.

On a Mustang, this is about the best mod you can do! The difference is amazing and is worth every penny. This should be the first mod anyone does to a 5 speed and most will agree with me.

I go to shows frequently and will allow people to dry-shift my car and you can even tell how good they are even when the car is not being driven. I could easily sell these things are car shows.

What brand you use is up to you. I think they are all about the same. My favorite is the Roush because I like the way it looks, but I use the Steeda Tri-Ax.
