3.8 life expectancy

How many miles everyone got? I'm at 110K and still going strong.

Also for the older guys, how long do these engines hold up?

I'm bored figured I'd start something.

Im pretty sure mine, or what used to be mine, rather....is somewhere in the 200k range. I dont really know. Its stuck at 103,252, and its been that way since I bought it.

drag_racer33 02-02-2011 07:56 AM

I am at 167k. It has a knock but is running fine with the exception of needing to replace some things and a constant AIR engine code

sand1303 02-03-2011 04:01 PM

mine is stuck on 104 something it has been that way since i got it about 4 years ago. i would imagine it is over 150,000 maybe around 175,00 but then again there is absolutely no way to tell because i don't know how long it was stuck before i got it. she still runs great though

BikerSk8rKid 02-03-2011 07:14 PM

What's up with you two have stuck milage. haha

stanley423 02-04-2011 01:18 PM

Mine has about 195K on it and its still going strong, but I don't know how long they are suppose to last I guess its all up to what you put them through.

Matt L 08-03-2011 08:17 AM

yeah im interested to know this too. im planning to run mine into the ground. i got lucky and bought mine for $8k with 24k miles on it. so right now it only has 34k miles.

also everyone says that "hot rodding" is terrible for your car... how bad is it really?

3.8LMustang 09-20-2011 02:32 PM

mine locked up at around 250k....it was because i used seafoam and that was the first time the engine got cleaned internaly, lol

(*facepalm* way to bring this one back, LMAO!!!)

krenogin 09-20-2011 06:30 PM

I've heard of similar things happening with transmissions. People haven't changed their tranny fluid in 150k miles and at that point changing the fluid for the first time actually ruins the transmission.

I was just talking to my mechanic about that the other day. If it hasn't been done regularly it is usually better off not doing it at all.

I would'nt flush it but I would change the filter and fluid.

With a little maintenence and a little "TLC" I think 300k plus is very do-able.

Getting back to the original subject. I'm thinking about jumping into a Mustang and given budget constraints, I'm probably in the late 90's, early 00's, price-wise. Given that they all are in the 100K area I'm a bit worried because of the problems with the head gaskets, although those stories have only been primarily in the FWD cars from the 93-95 range IIRC. I don't want a pile of iron in my driveway 6 months after buying it. I've checked other areas of posting but can't get a conclusive bit of information. I've had several say "STAY AWAY FROM THEM" but there isn't much real substantiation for that comment. I just spoke to a mechanic and he had a similar comment, but I think that may have been because all he sees is the problem cars. I've also seen comments about the intake gasket and issues with not changing anti-freeze, but that seems to be all the manufacturers.

Obviously buying a used car puts the buyer in a bad position because the history will be vague at best, unless it's from the original owner which may not be likely at this stage in the game.

Edit~ Didn't realize how old this original thread was!

This forum is now a ghost town, so it isn't likely anyone will notice. Only reason I am on is I was reminiscing the days of planning what I want(ed) to do to mine

Edit: if you check back I have 184,000 on mine and still going strong... even with how much I beat the hell out of it in high school. I'll be doing a tune up next spring after I take it out of winter storage but that's it.

patchelect 09-19-2013 03:35 AM

I did notice the ghost town look after I posted. Funny because on the miata.net site the traffic is huge and seeing a car site so idle is strange to me. I guess Miata owners are more truly interested in their cars instead of just owning them. :)

Thanks for responding. ;)

i am 185k and still going good .. this is what i bought the car for and also it is delivering what was expected .. cheers!

GlendaAlvarez 12-03-2013 02:15 AM

I'm at 155K and bought it at 40K. I switched to synthetic oil and change it every 10K. Runs great and it doesn't burn any oil. Switching to dual exhausts for more power and better mileage. Love my little convertible.

sand1303 02-21-2014 07:11 PM

just an update. still have my 96 and must be over 250k by now. still hasn't ever left me stranded

sand1303 06-27-2016 07:08 PM

lol.....still going strong! its sad that this thread started in 2011 and hasn't had any posts since 2014 is still on the first page
