Pathetic Miles Per Gallon

I bought a 2010 Mustang, V-6, 4.0 liter in June of last year. I noticed right away that I was getting horible milage. After doing some driving tests I calculate that I'm getting 11.3 MPG city, 17.8 MPG highway. I've taken it to two Ford dealers. When I dropped the car off to the first mechanic it had just a hair above 1/2 tank and I had only driven 67.7 MPG. The first one said he had his mechanic hook my car up to some machine (he won't say what the machine was) and according it it I was getting 18.5 MPG both city and highway. I'm not a genius but I know you don't get the same milage city and highway. The second dealer looked it over a bit and told me that I shouldn't pay attention to what the sticker says (It says 15 MPG city and 24 highway) and that all cars are different and get different milage. Does anybody might have a clue what is going on here? What might be causing the bad mileage. I've purchased a hand-held tuner with custom tunes that I hope are going to do the trick, but I'm very sceptical.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I get terrible gas mileage too but I've just come to terms with it. I get like 19 highway miles per gallon. I have a 2002 V-6 3.8L.

I get about 20 miles per gallon city. and around 23 on the highway. it depends on how you drive also.

NewMustangMan 01-20-2010 08:24 AM

something seems wrong. I have a 07 4.0 v6 and with my 91 octane performance tune i still get like 25 MPG highway and like 18 city

Must See 01-20-2010 08:39 AM

only thing i could think of would be your driving style. If you constantly floor it and speed then you would get crappy gas mileage. I managed to get 28mpg out of my car on the highway....

drag_racer33 01-20-2010 08:46 AM

mines an 00, but i still get better milage 24-5 if i drive it "nicely" on mainly highways but ive never been below 17, even when i had codes on

Well i average 20 MPG all around, basically i get 240 - 250 miles a tank to the fuel light. which is around 12-13 gallons. I live in KY and have lots of hills to climb and its rare im on flats. For my year, miles, and car being rebuilt im satisfied.. But i dont think v6's get good gas mileage, and I expect the 4.0 to be worse on gas than a 3.8. I wish you wouldve waited for the 2011 mustang, they have a new v6 with 300hp, and they can achieve 30mpg on the highway!

02trgt 01-20-2010 10:43 AM

my mustang gets 450 to a tank on the hwy

EDIT

450 KMS not miles

I get 17mpg city with a 93 octane performance tune

Lazerred6 01-20-2010 11:45 AM

My dads 06 v6 manual averages 26 over all

but he's a very laid back driver and rarely takes it above 3500 rpms if he can help it

stanley423 01-20-2010 01:57 PM

dude why did you just quote what he said lol

I always take it easy on the gas pedal. I try to stay at the speed limit (for now :)) I do everything I can to get as good as a MPG as possible. I'd love to take it out and see what it can do but I can barely afford the gas I'm using now.

just get used to it, you re driving a mustang now, gas doesnt matter (well it does but just tell yourself it doesnt to make u feel better) I get around 12-16 city with my 03 gt and yes i floor it why not

Cars are meant to be driven ;)

I drive less than 5 miles to work each day with stop signs 2-3 blocks apart...Takes me about 3 weeks to get through a tank. I do the math and I get 17-18 MPG. This is with a 2.3 liter turbo 4 cylinder. I dont even get into boost. The other hand I recently drove 800 miles from phoenix to san francisco and I got 27-28 MPG cruising at 75 with A/C on.

I guess it really depends on how much city driving you do.

r3dn3ck 01-21-2010 07:49 AM

want good mileage, keep your foot off the skinny pedal. That's what it is.

Look up Hypermiling. Use some of the techniques and you'll gain a shitload of mileage. You might think you're being easy on it but get a vacuum gauge and hook that up. If you drop below 10" of vacuum then you're sticking your foot too deep in the pedal for optimum mileage. After that, it's all gravy.

NewMustangMan 01-21-2010 09:23 AM

^ for real but i cant keep my foot out of it and i still get on average 24 MPG with the same engine..... Anyway its a mustang so just have fun!

OmahaMustang 01-21-2010 11:25 AM

Oh I remember those days of owning a v6 3.8...I would get 24-29ish.. while sporting some modes.. I had a CAI, bosh platinum 4 prong plugs...bosh wires..that little cheap ebay 3 dollar selenoid chip thing..mac dual exhaust... I used to drive sort of faster..but still...those were the days... now I get almost half that.. Lucky to see 225 to a tank..

WNRacing 01-21-2010 11:28 AM

^^ I don't think I ever got 20MPG with my old 3.8.. Maybe on the highway, but on a tank I averaged somewhere around 16-18. LMAO. Powershifting every gear, every time, Every red light was like a drag tree just waiting to go green!

Lazerred6 01-21-2010 11:52 AM

My SVT focus averages 27 around the city with easy driving. Long highway trips a 75 in 6th I can get 32-33 mpg

If I feel like having fun the mpg drops to about 23 lol

rkaz 01-21-2010 05:42 PM

My 02 GT gets like 18-20mpg. I not going 2 say I don't drive it hard but I'm more out of the gas pedal than I'm on it hard. Now my 99 Ranger gets like 12-15 mpg. U want 2 bitch about a v6 sucking gas try that on 4 size. It is 4x4 and got over 194,000 miles but mostly I drive it like I stole it, and mostly in town on my way 2 work.

unrealstang 01-21-2010 06:18 PM

Yeah I probably get bad gas mileage because I drive the hell out of my car. I floor it after being stopped at a red light or stop sign 85% of the time. I always find some Camaro to race in town and floor it. Reving up to initiate the race most likely drains the gas. And I drive an average of 80 miles a day. But its all in the description of owning a mustang. Get the good look and the advantage over the average Sedan but your going to be paying a hell of a lot for gas. If I wanted to get a "take it easy" kind of car I would have gotten something else at the car lot. :D

ToTortureAndEnslave 02-13-2010 10:03 PM

I was excited when i got my 2010 v6 too. Dealer told me 23 city-25 hw. hahah yea right I'm lucky to get about 17 :-/ Oh well
